What I don't understand is how they've had so many hits? They have okay voices, nothing special, and I think most of their songs sound the same...perhaps I've not heard enough of them to make a sound judgment but TBH I think they're overrated from what I've heard so far.

They've been releasing THREE singles every year since their debut in 2002. Nothing but absolute garbage. Pathetic.

Pretty much.

Vocals good?
Those vocals are sure of a lot better than that GA video. This promo was in winter, Amelle was sick. They were able to do all of their parts, and well. That GA video has weak vocals from Nicola, Cheryl, and especially Sarah, who wrecked the choruses and her solo was imperfect.
Let's compare them by album, if we must (because the MUSIC, and not the vocals, are what matter)
One Touch > Sound of the Underground
Angels with Dirty Faces > What Will the Neighbours Say?
Three <<<<<<<<<<<<<< Chemistry (easiest of the battles - Three is half killer, half horrible whereas Chemistry is the most consistent, coherent pop release of the 00s not named Robyn and/or Blackout)
Taller in More Ways < Tangled Up (close, but the first six tracks of TU are better than most of the things any pop act's done)
Change > Out of Control (and that's with a year's worth of hindsight, and a serious evaluation)
So, if you go by this .. SB are the better band. But, I find it ridiculous that people like Mazen (and Ed) who have never liked Girls Aloud's sound, or the sound of the creative team (Xenomania) feel they have the right to criticize them? I hate Katy Perry and everything she stands for, but I don't go into threads about her and discuss how she sucks in comparison to Lily Allen (and she does, by the way) because my opinion is INHERENTLY BIASED AND THEREFORE IRRELEVANT. Same with Mazen (and again, Ed) - if, after six years, you haven't liked one song that Girls Aloud has ever done, IGNORE THEM.
Alejandro, I can admit that Out of Control is their weakest album since their first - the production and songcraft is not up to the usual standards, and it sounds like it was rushed to capitalize on Cheryl's X-Factor fame. But, and I offer this to you, it's not the album to judge them by, I think you are thinking too much about their vocal strengths, and not about the strengths of the MUSIC. (if you can't separate the two ...) go back and listen to the three albums in between their first and their latest, and then you'll see why they're adored and respected so much by the critics (they're probably the most respected pop stars not named Justin or Beyonce, and purely because they admit their just the vessels to Xenomania's magic), their fans and their peers (Arctic Monkeys, Bloc Party and Coldplay off the top of my head).
And to get back to the point of this thread, I think if they really wanted to the could break the US - solely on the strength of Nadine's voice and Cheryl's undeniable charisma. (those are the reasons they've become so big in the first place!)

Thanks for offering me a educated, respectful comment. I never said I hate GA - I just do not find most of the group vocally able. The group has good songs, but if you sit down and think about it, most of it is written for them, not by them. The production team gets the thumbs up for the music - Nadine and maybe Nicola (rarely) are the ones that make the songs come to life. I think some of the music is strong, but not enough to make me a fan.
And the Sugas have had missteps, I can admit that as a sane fan. I can only listen to about half of AWDF and 3, whereas I can get through all the others. I couldn't even finish SOTU or OOC. The other 3 are very decent albums, I just can't call myself a superfan. WWTNS? stands as my favorite album.
