She was a cultural phenomenon. Every girl wanted to be like her. We had seen that before. Young girls and women dressed as mini Madonnas, Whitneys, Mariahs, Janets. And so far Britney is one of the few and only females to have ackomplished this as well.
Much like the 4 before her, her popularity and cultural impact outpeaked her commercial performance. That is rare and you do not see that often.
People act like she was in a rivalry with Christina.. when in fact it has never been a rivalry among equals. Britney Spears is the only artist of her generation that I would say is the closest to legendary status.
In fact as of now and as things are as they are, there are only 2 female "youngans" that are in that position:
1) Britney
2) Beyoncé
those two had cultural impact. The others.. well not so much, imo.

This is all so true. Great post.

People act as if it was the easiest thing to get albums selling 10m copies worldwide or better in the 1990's-early 2000's.
THAT was in still is outstanding, even for the time they achieved that. As I said in another context, only 5 women in the history of music have sold over 100 million albums worldwide. FIVE. and trust me, even the 90's had more female solo artist than just 5.
Britney is ranked #6 on the list of the best selling female albums artists of all times, selling (if my memory serves me well) 80 million albums +/- a few. The future will show, if she can become the glorious number 6.

Britney has sold over 84 million albums to date, more than any other female who isn't Madonna, Celine, Mariah, Whitney or Barbra. She is also the best selling female of the millennium by a large amount and no one is touching that. I think Madonna and Celine are behind her.
Poor the haters making up excuses and trying to discredit her as usual.
