I'm pretty okay with this being the weakest proper track from Arular. It's certainly cute, and it's definitely an early hint that we should have been expecting M.I.A. to do more sell-out, fun pop throughout her career. It should have been a bonus track in the same vain as Internet Connection, in my humble opinion.
Fun Fact: This song was NOT on that original XL US pressing of this album. This is also not the original version of the song, it's a remix Diplo did for Piracy Funds Terrorism that received a good amount of viral buzz.
i dont know why noone else thought this song was as hot...lyrically not the best but beats are beast!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Eh. I gave it a 7, as many did. It's good, I just don't think it's particularly special or memorable. In fact, I prefer a LOT of what we've eliminated from MAYA over it. Good for it making the top 30 though.
Fun Fact: I have so few feelings about this song.
Fun Fact 2: From this point on, every song has at least a 7.5 average. Go MAYA!
Up next, a track from KALA and a track from MAYA tie. But one got more tens
I can already guess what #1 is going to be, it has to be.
Yeah, most probably Paper Planes.
Anyway, I hope 20 Dollar will be Top 5 (at least), it's one of my fave songs on Kala.
Caps Lock is okay... I thought it would be out earlier tbh.
#28 - 7.5625 - STEPPIN' UP - /\/\/\Y/\ - Album Track Top Score: 10 (Von, Jameson Teqkilla, Collin)
Lowest Score: 4 (Clump)
Bummer that my own ten put this song above MPDR, but it IS a ****ing phenom. I love the unusual structure and samples, and the sheer insanity of it. And all the 1337-speak bragging. Fun ****.
Fun Fact: This is remixed on the Vicki Leekx mixtape. M.I.A. also wanted to do the track with JUST the chainsaws for a bit.
#27 - 7.59375 - SPACE - /\/\/\Y/\ - Album Track] Best Score: 10 (collin, Von)
Worst Score: 5 (Clump )
I love this song, it's one of the few after Story To Be Told that fits the digital age theme of Maya, and the beat breakdowns really bump. M.I.A. can do trippy very well when she wants to (as we'll see much later in the rater), but this is a really great attempt. Falls a bit flat on the melodic elements though, it always bothers me that that bass note is in the wrong key.
This was one of the first songs we heard from MAYA in the form of a viral video!
Mango Pickle Down River is just eh. It starts off nicely but it doesn't live up to the expectations that the beginning offers. Space and Steppin' Up are both great songs, but I'm not surprised they're out this early. Y'all don't understand MAYA.
