Its not because PLL really generates buzz online, Twitter and Facebook are ALWAYS spammed when its on but when you look at the ratings it just doesn't make sense but Gossip Girl is another good example.

I mean in South Africa were reality singing shows are still big and last year they aired both x-factor us, and idols as well as our own idols

This year only x-factor is not being shown this year cause of poor ratings.

Ok, but how does people watching it online benefit the networks who make their profit from advertisers?

It doesn't matter if 100 million people are watching streams, advertisers aren't going to pay for that. They're paying for the 5 million who are watching it on tv and seeing their ads.

I meant what's appealing in terms of what is actually displayed on the show and what is being reviewed on. Good criticism, moral fibre ect... Then they might check it out on Youtube and see how a certain contestant performance or what a certain judge said and they might think to themselves "I wanna see more of that. I'll tune in next week"

It's that simple. People do follow the flow but they have their own minds and they do as they please despite the positive or negative. See it's not just about how successful something is. If you're only watching and saying you are liking something because it's successful then whenever that changes, so will your opinion of it. You can't look at things that way. It's ignorance. And I refuse to believe the majority do.

I just think the general public will be more interested in what's buzzing in the online culture and that will determine whether they become an avid watcher or not.

I understand what your saying, but if right out of the gate the focus (and the headlines) is on it's lackluster ratings and only that, then the general public might never read about it's appealing panel.

And you kind of contradict yourself. On the one hand you say "people do follow the flow" and then you say "people make up their own minds". If you're following the flow and what others like, then you're not making up your own mind. You can't have it both ways. And if the ratings don't pick up, there won't be much buzz for people to follow anyways.
