It's instantly recognizable for people with some kind of pop culture education-- as is the Britney and Madonna performance.

Yes. Britney's performance is more instantly recognizable to the general public. STILL, that performance isn't cared about, nor do the majority of people care where it's from. You're acting as if everybody on planet earth could be able to name where Britney performed and what year if they saw that picture.
