Very silly person you are. Those lyrics are at least easy to relate to. A listener can sing those lyrics themselves and feel connected or if in some disaster situation and feeling the need to be empowered, singing those lyrics relate to them. Not just Katy.
Nothing in "Applause" is easy to relate to. One will never find themselves being a "Koons" or basically anything that is said in the song. "Applause"'s strength is that she took the route of a very generic hook/chorus, against electro-pop production, hoping that will connect with the listener. Which it will, and has as the article/iTunes/radio shows. And for myself, since I don't really care what she's saying in the verses, nor really understand them (vocally).
"Roar" however both holds the quality of having Top 40 qualities, plus the listener being able to relate to the song (which is why it'll succeed easily on formats like Hot AC).
