If you're a Beyonce fan u shd know that throwback is comfort zone for Beyonce. She channelled the 70s on Bday and moved on to the 80s on 4. The strength of 4 was her vocal prowess. She didnt hold back at all; another proof that rubbishes the claim about trending-chasing.

The production on ST is minimalistic not basic and I'll credit Boots contribution and Bey's spontaneity for that. Bey went from showing off her dexterity to displaying vocal restraint

Your examples hold no merit; you said "I wouldn't be surprised if ..." That means nothing but a wild imagination. The-Dream's demo of 1+1 is a ballad and we have no access to the prior incarnations of BTINH to know what was added or removed besides Babyface produced it and he prominently features piano in his work e.g Beyonce's Broken-hearted girl. 4 is an RnB album, nothing trendy. What album released in the decade prior to 4 sounds like it? Beyoncé, as the star that she is and reeling off the heels of IASF, completely changed her direction and went for a much more R&B, down tempo approach when radio was just starting to accept EDM and was still very much rooted in fluff-fodder pop music. It's daring in the sense that Beyoncé could have just done another album of generic pop music, but she didn't. She did something she wanted to do.

Obviously Beyonce brings out the best in people.

You would try harder to impress and submit your best work if BEYONCE wants to work with you. You wouldn't care as much or wouldn't want to waste your best tracks with a non-factor.

This isn't surprising at all. In fact, I remember thinking that her follow-up to 4 would be Afro-beat centric. All signs seemed to point to it. The African rhythms in "Grown Woman", the island vibes of Standing on the Sun, the tribal visuals for the Mrs. Carter World Tour interludes. And then she drops this chilly Alternative R&B masterpiece with Self-Titled. Talk about blindsided!

I think the point here is that 4 is very much ahead of it's time. If it was released now amidst the Sam Smith hype and all his sound alikes, it would smash (bar RTW). Whether it was 4 or 21 that caused this shift in the sound radio are playing is irrelevant to me, at least. 4 was ahead of it's time.
