Discussion: Why do we leave tips?

Tipping is a necessity if you're not in California, Alaska, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, or Washington.
There's a specific minimum wage law for tipped workers. Tipped workers HAVE to make a specific amount of tips each month JUST so that they can average out to $7.25 an hour. Usually that's $30 a month in tips. The LEAST you could do is help them out with a couple dollars, especially after they waited on your every need for an hour or two with a smile on their face the entire time.

It's not about who can afford to throw money around, especially when everytime we bring that up you guys change it to the quality of their serving and how hard they work.
Ya'll are being 1 sided, and keep using money as a factor as if they're the only ones struggling, when let's be honest - there's at least 1 person on here saying that, that doesn't have more than $10 in their pocket which I find ironic.

You claim to be poor, and waiters usually aren't in a great financial situation either. A tip is to help them out. But am over and done with it.

A better, reasonable question would be: Why is it that we pay more of a tip based on the price of the food? Whether I go to Applebee's ( ) and spend $50 or go somewhere expensive and pay $200, often times the waiter/waitress is doing the same amount of work. Why do we leave a $10 tip at Applebee's versus a $40 tip at the expensive restaurant? If I order a Filet Mignon instead of a salad, why must I tip the waitress more money because she carried out something more expensive than a salad?

This I agree with. Especially since the tip is going to the waiter and not the chef.

I had no idea that some waiters made $3 an hour. Isn't minimage wage around $10? The struggle is real.
I always tip 15%, but I do NOT appreciate some places that think they are slick and program a "click here for 15%" tip option on their debit machine that really charges you 20%. Not to be stereotypical but I've seen this mostly in chinese restaurants.

this is slightly off-topic, but I ate at a restaurant the other day and tipped the usual 20%, and the waitress asked me (in the absolute most condescending way) when the tipping standard went back down to 20% from 25% (like, wtf?). I'm like, 'wasn't the standard 15% just a couple of years ago?' couldn't believe that she had said that, and she seemed to think that she deserved a 25% tip with her attitude, lol. if the standard has gone up to 25%, I haven't heard anything about it and neither had my friend.
in my particular location, servers (or anyone who works, for that matter) make at least minimum wage. I've never heard of servers being paid $2.00 an hour and relying on tips to make a living until now, but that is truly unfortunate.

Actually, tip money gets added up and divide amongst everyone that works there

Because some gurls/members here thought they could change the system in the US to make the businesses owners pay more for their workers' wages. But in reality they will find other way to cut cost and increase revenue. Even if tipping is abolished, and the wages go up for waiters, I'm sure the costs for entrees go up as well.

That's so rude.
I wouldn't have left a tip if she said that to me.

I work in Pennsylvania, so the numbers here at least are...
Min. wage = $7.25 an hour
I work in more areas than just food service (cash, kitchen, etc.) so I make min. wage, plus my raises, and the occasional tip = $8.25
My (strictly) server friend works at Bob Evans... = $2.13 an hour

Minimum wages law varies in different states and also they don't count in my state if the person is a part-time worker.
I hate those automated tips too they bug me, like when we eat in the group and I swear we always overtipped the bland waiter.

Mess. Those making at least minimum wage who aren't waiters don't need the tip.
It's annoying when you leave a tip expecting it to go to the person who you served you, but the manager and others take the majority of it.

There's no appreciation for waiters/waitresses. It's a very hard job. First of all, we are responsible for more than 4 or 5 tables at a time. We have to tend to the needs of about a dozen or more people at a time (esp. when we are busy). We have to have a plastic smile on the entire time and bring you your food, drinks, appetizers, desserts and we have to tend to your complaints (soup is too cold, soda is too flat) without getting upset. Balancing those trays of food alone & remembering who ordered what already is difficult.
At the end of the shift, we have side jobs that consist of cleaning the mess you left behind. BTW, tips are often split with the chefs, busboys, and hosts (so dont think its only for us). Honestly, if tipping is a problem for you, then you maybe you should just eat at Mcdonalds or order takeout and call it a day.

Only if you're working in a restaurant that practices tip sharing. Not all restaurants do that.
The fact of the matter is, unless you had some egregiously terrible service, YOU look like poor, low class trash if you walk out of a restaurant without tipping, whether you like it or not. I would be mortified if I was in a party where someone didn't tip simply because "they don't see the point." That's f!cking ridiculous. Take that bullsh!t to Church's Chicken, you broke ass fool.

Stop it please.
You go spend time at the ''Public library'' on a Pop forum anticipating Pop albums and worshipping Pop singers instead of looking for a job??? Tell me about your journey back and forth to the library when you were waiting for your account to be verified please.
You know, money doesn't rain on people, you gotta fight to get it.
And if you weren't paying for the food then why are you even bothered?
