Ashanti was SLAYING as SOLO WOMEN.
She kept songs at #1 on the Hot 100 for 18 consecutive weeks (Always On Time/Aint It Funny?/Foolish) in 2002
Her first album debuted with 503,000 copies SOLD while having the #1 & #2 songs in the country on the Hot 100 at the same damn time.
Ashanti holds the record of BIGGEST first week sales for a female debut album.
She then went on a few weeks later to having 4 songs in the top 10 of the Hot 100 at the same damn time.
She won a Grammy, 8 Billboard Awards & 2 AMA's off her debut album.
Ashanti was the IT girl of R&B in 2002.
Beyonce was lost in the sauce when they released "Work It Out" in 2002. Beyonce was no force for Ashanti, Nelly or Nelly & Kelly.
Ya'll really kill me always trying to downplay someone else's accolades when she made history that has YET to be repeated or topped.
Bey needed that "Girl Group" exposure to catapult her career. When she was in the group it made people realize how much of a star she really was. it made her stand out and the group only complimented her star quality. Plus, it was the 90s Monica and Brandy was already in their peaks along with acts like Mary J, Mariah, JLO etc the industry wouldn't be open to another solo female R&B artist. It doesnt even matter how talented you are. The gap after Aaliyah's tragic death was filled with Ashanti and Irv Gotti knew what he was doing pushing her out right at the beginning of 2002.
