She may not be a genuine songwriter, but I do believe she's in charge of her sound.

Substituting words for swear words isn't really considered writing credits but technically it is...

Desperate times members call for desperate measures, so people start dragging the obvious. Rihanna's more of a singer anyway, a lot of popstars are, it's no big deal.

Because she's not a songwriter.

Because giving Rihanna credit means making her more of an icon... and that doesnt put their faves in a good place

She is as much of a songwriter as most of her peers, on the level of Beyonce and Britney, who wrote songs alone tbh. But of course not on the level of gaga or Adele. The real question is, maybe on the same level of Katy, for which we don't really know how much she actually writes

I don't get what you're trying to say....
Beyonce's music is ten times better than Rihanna's....you know why? Because Beyonce actually works with her music and perfects it to sound the way SHE wants it to sound. She uses her voice over instrumentals to add depth to her music, she harmonizes with her own voice to add substance to her music, she doesn't CO- WRITE, she CO - CREATES, she isn't GIVEN smash singles she MAKES legendary, important music that is culturally relevant.....
Does Rihanna do any of that? No, she shops around for cute bops like cute shoes, she goes into the studio, lays the track and decides to switch a couple words, she then has someone to tell her how to sing so that it sounds good.....the song smashes and is forgotten months later

*EDIT: Can the Navy defend Rihanna without bringing someone else into the conversation? Like, even if the rumors about Beyonce were true, ( which they are clearly not so Idk why you girls keep trying it with that stale ass shade ) how does that make Rihanna any better? Lol

It's pop music, Rihanna doesn't need to write most of her songs and that doesn't automatically mean she's distant from what she puts out.

But.... Beyonce's most know songs were WRITTEN FOR HER.....
Crazy in love
Halo
Irreplaceable
Single Ladies
The fact that she is credited as songwriter doesnt mean she came up with that song... LOL
Actually... I dont think Beyonce ever had a song where she is the only credited songwriter....
Rihanna's Rude Boy was Rihanna's idea... she actually said more than once that she was happy that song became a hit coz it was the song she had most imput in until that time

I actually think Katy writes most of her lyrics, like Gaga, but they also rely on their producers to shape their songs. Adele probably writes 95% of her music, so she's definitely on a different level.
Britney may have written/co-written only a dozen songs in her entire career. I think Rihanna has a bit more say than Britney. Like, if the lyrics don't feel genuine she'll change them to her liking.
None are really comprable to Beyoncé, who's more of a vocal producer and "writes", or rather, comes up with melodies and harmonies for a lot of her songs. When she does write lyrics they're pretty obvious.

First off, Rihanna's music is better than Beyonce, the fact that Beyonce works on it more does not make it better, since Rihanna's songs are the work of the best songwriters and producers.
Second, Rihanna does not overhype her songwriting skill, she never overhyped herself so it's hard to say how much input she has. You can clearly see a song like mother Mary was written by her mostly, same as do ya thang

Does Beyonce come up with the melodies? Because if she does, that puts her way above Katy who seems to write a lyric or two in her last two albums...

Yeah exactly. I mean, it's such a big deal nowadays, there's nothing wrong with not writing her own songs (for a pop girl).
It's good / better obviously when the artists do it, because it shows a real involvment but not EVERYONE has the talent for, you know what I mean ?
It doesn't take away the fact that Rihanna is an amazing popstar. The fact that she co-wrote her songs or not doesn't matter, it ain't gonna change the perception we have of her. End of story.

I agree with this. If you write your own music that's a BIG plus but if you don't it's not like you're suddenly fake and an awful popstar. I think if you have the voice to back it up like Whitney, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, etc., songwriting isn't necessary.
