People are freaked out because they see her as an unoriginal copycat, namely they note that she shows a lot of similarity to Lana and Lorde. In actuality, that's a pretty viable entry niche for her with Lana's more recent work sounding little like the beloved BTD and Lorde not (yet) releasing her follow-up to Pure Heroine. Like any other artist, she'll just have to distinguish herself more in general if she wants to last against the currently bigger names.
listened to an interview and the youtube comments are in awe. like she's the only real girl to be "authentic" and she seems so manufactured to me. only knew about her from seeing a pic of her blue hair. she obviously think she's "so cool" because her dad listened to 2pac and her mom to alanis & nirvana
I heard her album and I thought it was overly manufactured and designed to appeal to next generation hipsters currently going through puberty. Think of her as their gateway to (hopefully) better alt-pop.
I dont use it at all but I'm not surprised some people do. Like ontherocks said, there's definitely a higher investment by her label to make her happen. You can tell.
It feels like these labels push Halsey to be the next Lana, Melanie the next Marina etc.
A new generation of indie girls is coming, I think it's very normal. I hated Lana at first (she became huge out of nowhere, I saw her as a girl with botox lips who can't sing live) but now she's one of my favourite artists, she does art.
As of now, Halsey doesn't impress me, Melanie on the other hand is interesting, I haven't seen the childhood/circus influences that much.
