What You Don't Do is a great song.
Never Let You Down & Evil Is But a Shadow are pretty good songs too.
Oh, and Best Night is one of the best if not the best on RH. An underrated gem.

Three Roses in My Hands
Letting Go
To the North | 20. Kari Rueslåtten - To the North
So yeah, as showed by the inclusion of the title track none of y'all know her and none of y'all is interested in getting to know her which I completely understand. She is not really an artist ATRL would fall for. But let me repeat myself, I totally love for no real reason actually, she could even sing a phone book and I would still listen to it.
To the North is better than her last year's output, Time to Tell. It's more varied and, in its own way, also a bit more experimental. Well, that might not be the best way to put it as it's not experimental at all. It's just that I expected her to sing only simple, acoustic, piano-driven ballads, so To the North is in fact a bit more than that. There is that cute electric guitar solo in Letting Go, the moody atmosphere in Arrow in My Heart, the male vocals in the lead single Turn, Turn, Turn and Battle Forevermore, its chorus is cute for singing along and yeah, that's definitely not what I expected. The record as a whole is not very immediate but obviously worth spending more time with it. A peaceful experience which will help you relax after a hard day but at the same time it's not just background music, there is some depth to it. |
19. Tame Impala - Currents
I've always appreciated artists who evolve, try to re-create/change their sound. It's obviously not always a good thing but hey, you can't do wrong if you're doing nothing. For Tame Impala, their reinvention definitely paid off. While I quite liked Lonerism, Currents was the record which truly wow'd me and made me really appreciate the band.
So yeah, Wikipedia told me that their debut album was mostly psychedelic rock and pop, and that was cute but not exactly for me, I guess. I feel so basic right now, as I find the dance-oriented with synthesizers overtaking guitars sound of Currents much more interesting and exciting. The band was inspired by various genres, ranging from synthpop to r&b or even disco. That made their music much accessible, I could even picture a single off the album being played on the radio. And despite the undeniable dance value of the songs, it's a really consistent and cohesive record. It's not like you're gonna bop hard to one track and then sleep during the next, it's more of a swinging all way through the longplay.
What stopped me from putting Currents higher on my list is the fact that it surprisingly turned out to be a love/hate relationship with me. Like, when I listened to it during my 3-hour train trip, it was excellent, and when I listened to it the following day, it was boring trash. I have to be in a certain mood to listen to it. |

Sparks
Beyond Love
10:37 | 18. Beach House - Depression Cherry
I should've probably mentioned it when I revealed Sparks as the #37 best song of the year but whatever, better late than never. A shoutout to our dearest Eeveelution, without ha and ha flawless taste I wouldn't get around to Beach House. I hated them at first but in a longer run, they turned out to be pretty great so thank you for that
If someone asked me to describe Depression Cherry in three words, I'd say 'Beach House album'. Unlike #19, they aren't searching for new sounds, they keep sticking to dream pop which I actually don't mind. They're kind of masters at what they're doing, I don't think I would be as slayed by this if it was released by any other artist. Anyways, I was really pleasantly surprised that even after quite a lot plays Depression Cherry still sounds as beautiful, fresh and relaxing as when I played it for the first time, poor Thank Your Lucky Stars. There are plenty of cool and interesting tracks here, besides the obvious highlight Sparks, I also really loved Beyond Love, 10:37 or Space Song. The sequencing might be a small problem as all of the best songs were put right at the beginning of the LP so it might be a bit tiring to sit through the rest at first. Fortunately, I got used to it and it doesn't bother me now, so I can appreciate the thing as a whole. |
17. Jazmine Sullivan - Reality Show
I hate you people so much. Why did you let Jazmine, the super-cute and super-talented artist flop? She should be the biggest r&b girl right now and Forever Don't Last should be smashing, the critics agree! But anyways, quality doesn't always give you commercial success, a shame.
Even though I used to stan for Jazmine, I didn't really expect Reality Show to slay so much. Love Me Back was fairly mediocre and after that she announced she was retiring so yeah, I kind of thought she lost her touch and creativity. However, as y'all can hear, she proved me wrong. I tend to prefer PBR&B over its traditional form but Sullivan's new record has some kind of an amazing throwback feeling which I cannot unlove. The melodies are quite amazing and so are the lyrics. Very relatable, no wonder it's called Reality Show. And that's amazing about her, she doesn't need any cheap and tacky gimmicks, she is just doing her **** and it works.
Also, now that I think about it, it's her strongest work by a long shot, even if it doesn't have a song as brilliant as Bust Your Windows or In Love with Another Man. |

Jaded | 16. Disclosure - Caracal
I know you were disappointed with this. I was as well. Settle still knocks so hard, I had the time of my life at their concert... and then this came out. I only listened to it, like, once or twice and felt rather negative about it. However, about a month later I came back to it... and it suddenly became kinda great?
Yes, it's no Settleand feels like it could've been better, more energic and hard hitting. I don't know whether it's the Lawrence brothers lacking ideas or wanting to go in a calmer, more mature direction this time around, I certainly hope for the latter. The album is rather midtempo and I feel as if it was created to be listened from start to finish which was not always the case with their earlier work where the highlights were much more obvious. There are also more superstar guests, The Weeknd, Lorde or even Sam Smith are doing their work quite well actually, but as tracks such as Jaded or Bang That prove, the boys are the best on their own. No matter what you feel about Caracal or Disclosure as a whole, you can't deny the fact they're talented and experienced producers. |

Tame, Beach & Jazmine all had great albums this year.
Also, finally some recognition for Disclosure.
I need to check the other one.

Low-key glad Adele and Ellie missed your Top 20. I figured those albums would be in everyone's Top 5. Good For You's surprisingly low Will we be seeing more of her?

Does it? I mean, I know Settle inside out and I never had a feeling Caracal sounds like a collection of its demos. The production is similar, yeah, but songs like Willing and Able or Superego take Disclosure in a different direction.

Nope, only one entry per artist.
I love all the songs in my countdown though, so it's not like Good for You is much weaker than, say, 40-31.

When it just got released, I did prefer it too. However, it got old much quicker than DC. I need to come back to it at some point.

I was just about to praise your flawless taste for including Beach House, Jazmine and Tame Impala, then I saw that **** Disclosure album perched in front of them. I rebuke it.
But at least you see the error of your ways.

some great choices! love currents and reality show. couldn't get into depression cherry tho, don't think it's my thing
caracal was so disheartening to listen to tho like, it genuinely feels like they're bored of their own music. it's just so neutered. i get a little upset whenever i listen to when a fire starts to burn and remember the ENERGY they used to represent

I know, mess I was making the rankings about a week ago and both Depression Cherry and Currents slayed me harder than per usual today. They're probably objectively better but I spent more time with Caracal so I had to give the edge.

I hated Carcal tbh I lost all my hype for Disclosure.

I've done this several times. Pretty sure I'm gonna have to re-edit some graphics before Top 10.
