Britney's entire life has caused controversy.
BOMT with its Catholic schoolgirl outfit.
1999 RS cover, one of the most iconic covers of all time
Breast implant rumors, belly-baring, her navel ring, the virgin/sex-kitten image
Britney/Xtina debate of the 2000s
Artistic integrity, vocals, lip-synching, etc.
Videos always dominated pop culture and MTV
Justin, Cry Me A River, etc. Avril Lavigne and the anti-Britney wave starting in 2002
Slave, TOMH, ITZ, Onyx Hotel, Toxic diamond suit
Political issues, Saddam Hussein having Britney posters in his castle, 2003 CNN controversy, being blamed for "American decadence" that led to terrorist attacks in 2001
are all examples of controversy from her early career. If you weren't there to witness it, you shouldn't be talking tbh

The most controversial thing about the ITZ era was a plastered Britney marrying her friend after a crazy night in Las Vegas, then cutting her tour short to marry a white trash back-up dancer. I completely agree that Britney the celebrity/person is more controversial, but career-wise, in terms of output, Gaga has this easily.

Breathe On Me & Touch Of My Hand were way more controversial than BTW. Honestly I don't understand why monsters are clinging to BTW when even Judas was more controversial than that track.

Is this the correct comment you're replying to? I didn't mention Born This Way or Judas. See my previous comments in here as to why I consider Lady Gaga a more controversial artist than Britney Spears', whose only controversy career controversy is being overly sexual/showing skin. All else has to do with her personal life, which I agree makes her as a celebrity/personally much more controversial outside of careers.

Britney hands down.
-BOMT video. Parents were pissed b/c she was only 17 dressed in a "sexified" catholic school girl outfit.
-Rolling stone 1999 magazine cover caused controversy because she was underage.
-Britney saying she will remain a virgin until after marriage
-2000 MTV VMAs when she stripped on stage to a nude suit.
-2001 MTV VMAs with the snake and sexy outfit. Peta was pissed at her for bringing animals on stage.
-Lipsynching
-Britney vs. Xtina feud
-Controversial music video like Slave 4 U
-Breast implant rumors
-Her breaking up with Justin and the cheating accusations by him
-Her look a like in the Cry Me A River music video confirmed cheating rumors
-Her flipping off paparazzi in Mexico but Mexicans thought she was disrespecting Mexico so she had to hold a special press conference about it and her shutting down her show in Mexico because of thunder and lightening. People were pissed and the Mexican media trashed her (some ex-fans are pissed about to this day).
-Britney and Madonna kiss. Britney got a majority of the backlash
-Britney's comments on President Bush on CNN 2003
-Sexual performances caused outlash
-Sexy outfits like slave 4 u thong over pants
-Onyx hotel tour not having an 18 and older label
-Her 55 hour wedding to Jason
-Marraige to K-fed, people thought she was a homewrecker b/c of Shar Jackson.
-Chaotic documentary/reality show controversy
-Driving with her baby in her lap
-Shortiy after almost dropping her baby, bodyguard saved him from falling
-Partying like crazy while carrying her babies around with her
-She ran over a paparazzi's foot

-She was put under suicide watch
-Officially out under conservatorship
-2011 criminal music video caused controversy b/c of committing robberies, running away from cops, shower sex scene

I love Brit, but don't call people idiots for believing gaga is more controversial than brit.
Gaga is by FAR the most controversial artist of the last 8 years, but britney does beat her because of her personal life.
The breakdown was on EVERY magazine for like 3 months and is still talked about today, and is one of the most controversial moments of pop culture.
|
Britney had a both, controversial career AND personal life.
I think most of the Gaga fans were too young at the time to remember any of the controversy Britney caused before the year 2006.
There are magazine covers, music videos, outfits and sexual onyx hotel tour performances that caused lots of controversy.

Question: how is Britney controversial? Some of the things she has done have raised some eyebrows, sure, but I don't ever recall anything she has done being particularly polarizing. There are a lot of people who are indifferent to Britney Spears, while Lady Gaga is quite literally a "love her or hate her"-type artist.
Also, the 2007 era is not controversy, sorry to say. That was just a grown woman with a likely mental illness behaving foolishly in public and the media reporting on it because her foolish behavior was so newsworthy.

I read them; that doesn't make them accurate. This forum is full of Britney stans who tend to exaggerate her success and media presence.

You could throw Janet in there too, but my original comment remains true. Britney's controversies spanned years rather than a few here and there by some other artists

Britney had both, controversial career as an artist and extremely controversial personal life.
Its funny how Monsters try to act that Gaga is more controversial artist and performer, because Britneys performances, vids and albums all caused controversies unrelated to her personal issues.
The claim that Britneys controversies are just about her oversexualized image which was done before is also ridiculous. First, its irrelevant that it was done before when it still caused such huge backlash and upset the GP, and its not even true, practically anything she did in the early 00s has turned into a controversy (and I think that was the reason she had a mental breakdown - the pressure and attention turned on her was just overwhelming).
Second, you can say the same about Gaga bringing attention to herself by wearing clown attire, what was also done before and much better.
The arguments Monsters use in this thread are just laughable.

Sorry, you quoted a response of mine to someone saying BTW was controversial etc. Just because her controversy was sexual doesn't mean it didn't exist. I would agree with you if the question was "most deliberately litigious/purposefully polemic artist" but the question is whose career caused the most controversy. The only answer is Britney. Although Gaga tries to drum up controversy, there was far more controversy surrounding Britney Spears. That's just fact.
I'm genuinely surprised that some people are saying it's Gaga. Her stans are either blind or very young.
