That said, all Calvin is doing by praising Rita is making out that he's the good guy. If he actually felt that way, he wouldn't be trying to sabotage her career, by taking music off her album forcing her to delay it, resulting in her losing steam from Black Widow.
Rita may have done bad, but he's done just as bad. And he's covering it up by playing with public ignorance about it all. He cleverly never explained why he didn't want Rita to perform, and he never brought up the fact he's delaying her career success, and also reducing it. He just "praises" her, even though what he wishes for her contradict the actions his made.
So in short, he's being fake.
