Yeah. I was against it for so long. Something about it bugged me. It's French! It's 3 hours long! t's gay! It's NC-17! I skipped it in theatres.
Even while I was watching it I wasn't sure. Do we really need to hold on her face for 3 minutes while she eats? Do we need to walk with her for 5 minutes while she wanders the streets crying? Do we need to see her dancing to a full (Lykke Li!) song? Do we need to watch her having sex for 15 minutes from the moment she takes off her clothes to the moment she finishes?
I think it was the NY Times that said you won't really feel the movie's full impact until a couple days later when you suddenly find yourself thinking about her and wondering how she's doing, as if she were a real person.
Those long scenes told us so much about her. The way she eats her food, deals with rejection by wandering the streets crying, the way she dances and has sex....all those scenes were slowly building a character and you don't even realize it while watching. It's like you're spying on her life over the course of a decade. I didn't know you could make a movie like that. It's not a French movie or a gay movie or an NC-17 movie or a 3 hour movie. It's just a great movie.
Woo, I Monroed a bit there.
