Texas Chainsaw Massacre would not be released as PG-13 today.
And Halloween would also be Rated R in today's landscape even without nudity.
Both of those movies are brutal, raw, and before their time. Their ratings are reflective of the time period. The ratings system evolves as time passes.

That's what I don't understand. Everyone's being such a purist--like "if it was really paying homage to slashers it should be rated R." But none of those slashers would even be rated R if they came out today...ratings are so different.
The movie is great and the rating has nothing to do with it. I saw it at a festival and didn't even know what it was rated, I actually just figured it was R. People shouldn't let something so trivial dictate whether they watch a movie that they may enjoy.

Um yes it would. The only bloody scene is when Sally gets blood on her face after the guy gets hit by the truck. There's barely any swearing and no nudity. It would get a PG-13 for sure.

No, it wouldn't. That film is ripe with disturbing imagery and settings. Blood and gore aren't the only qualifications for a film being Rated R. Mood and effectiveness play into it a lot.

Due to the film's violent content, Hooper struggled to find a distributor. Louis Perano of Bryanston Pictures eventually purchased the distribution rights. Hooper limited the quantity of onscreen gore in hopes of securing a 'PG' rating, but the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) rated it 'R'. The film faced similar difficulties internationally.

It was even similarly rated outside the US (which is seen as a prude for their ratings). As I said, it would Rated R today for the mere fact it's so disturbing.

The Final Girls was cute... good acting from Taissa and Malin and very emotional. Lots of good female characters, too.
For being an homage to 80s slasher movies, though, it did some things kind of weirdly imo. Adam Devine's character seemed more like an 00s manchild type, and the Camp Bloodbath final girl seemed more 90s/modern too. I kept getting confused because Malin's character had more of the personality of a final girl - shy, virginal, etc.
The Tina character had me rolling on the floor though. Whenever they cut to her in the taped up oven mitts and safety jacket I got my life

Thought the same thing about the final girl and Ackerman, I feel like they'd be switched. The bad ass bitch who smoked cigarettes doesn't seem like the final girl--whereas the mom's character would. That was really the only thing I really had a problem with.
I do agree that there really isn't a character quite like Adam Devine's in the 80s slashers, like FT13. But it didn't bother me too much.

I'm not sure where this idea that a film has to feature blood, gore, or nudity to be Rated R...

I don't believe The Conjuring was rated R just because of the mood
The themes alone warrant that rating...

You know that rating was ******** though, the movie was hardly even scary. Lots of horror movies manipulate MPAA rules to get a higher rating than it actually needs to build hype that it's ~so scary.
Like, do you think ANY of the Paranormal Activity should've been rated R? No. It's all for creating hype.

It's rated R for violence and terror. The mood has a lot to do with it. You can get away with a brutal theme (although the theme of The Conjuring isn't THAT brutal or deserving of an R rating) if you hold back on showing things and creating a complete mood of terror.

No. The rating is quite appropriate actually. And what you said actually doesn't make sense. Most studios want their film to Rated PG-13 because more people can fill the theaters, and the film can gross more (becoming more profitable). They usually do whatever they can to trim horror movies of gore and blood for that reason exactly. No one is "manipulating" the MPAA to purposely get a Rated R film. Unless they specifically want to make a movie so brutal that it gets plastered with an NC-17 label.

you have a point
remember when they were handing out crucifixes and hiring pastors to stand by the entrance/exits of theaters playing it

No, it's not. If Insidious can be PG-13, so can The Conjuring. There is absolutely nothing in that movie requiring an R rating. The most graphic scene was the exorcism and The Last Exorcism was PG-13.

My god really?
After movies like Annabelle, Devil's Due, Unfriended, and The Devil Inside were given R ratings, to still pay any regard MPAA ruling in the horror genre is just foolish. All of those movies could be PG-13. But like I said, higher rating = more hype; people love to be scared, even if the basic GP finds jump scares to be "horror".

It's mood is not comparable to Insidious though. Insidious is ripe with humor. Not even in the same boat. The Conjuring on the other hand is actually quite terrifying for younger viewers in comparison. It even has "terror" as one of the reasons for its rating.
R ratings don't create more hype. If that was the case, why hasn't The Green Inferno blown up at the box office? It's a hard R at that. There are plenty of R rated horror films that have flopped. PG-13 horror films are more profitable, most of the time.

Watched two movies for the October Challenge today. Here are my thoughts on both:
The Relic (FTV): Such an awful movie. It was so awful I almost dozed off to sleep during parts of the movie and I had to turn it off and finish it when I woke up since it bored me to tears and I just wanted to sleep. Only positives is that the acting wasn't bad and I maybe liked one or two scenes. Skip this. 2.5/10.
Fatal Games (FTV), Granted, this is not a high quality horror film but I did have some fun with it. The kills were cool and very gory and I loved the soundtrack. Would give this a 6.5/10.

Sis, Insidious 1 and 2 both have terror in their ratings. "Rated PG-13 for thematic material, violence, terror and frightening images, and brief strong language". The Conjuring was not Rated R for being too scary. That was just hype. It was Rated R because of the blood in the exorcism scene.

They can have it in their description. It's PG-13 terror. Not terror that is so bad it should be given an R rating.
The Conjuring is rated R for disturbing violence and terror.
