Lady Gaga descended on RBC Royal Bank Bluesfest on Saturday at the centre of a confetti-strewn, laser-lit carnival that energized a crowd of some 27,000 with a relentless beat.
In essence, the tiny dynamo straddled the worlds of electronic dance music and pure pop, uniting the vast audience with her over-the-top showmanship and an irresistible string of electro pop hits deployed with the help of a guitar-heavy rock band and a parade of dancers.
The passion she brought to her big ballad, Born This Way, echoed the sentiment with a tear-jerking wallop.
Of course, Gaga indulged her own wildness with an array of outrageous costumes, none of which quite covered her bum, and a rainbow of wigs. Her powerful voice carried like a siren, and there was no evidence of lip syncing, as you could tell by the panting between songs as she caught her breath.
In all, it was an impressively physical performance that was loaded with visual eye candy.
