Can you believe that Kelly Clarkson has been singing better than every other bitch in the game for an entire decade now? The voice of our generation is celebrating 10 years of angsty slayage in the music industry by releasing her first greatest hits album next month, calling up Ryan Seacrest early this morning from a castle in Dublin to premiere the set’s first single “Catch My Breath”.
Co-written with close pal Jason Halbert, who is behind such flaw-free KC songs as “Ready”, “Cry”, and the shoulda-been-a-single “You Love Me”, “Catch My Breath” is a little different from what we’re typically used to hearing from her Kelejesty. Yes, it’s still anthemic and empowering like any classic Clarkson tune, but it’s also a little warm and fuzzy — something I never thought I’d say about a Kelly Clarkson record.
The American Idol icon is on top of the world after turning 30, bagging the biggest hit of her career, and falling head over heels in love, and it shows. “Catch My Breath” sees Clarkson looking back on her tumultuous past and embracing the good things in the present with the kind of maturity and perspective that can only come with age and experience.
“Addicted to the love I found / heavy heart, now a weightless cloud,” sings an introspective Kelly. “Making time for the ones that count / I’ll spend the rest of my time / laughing hard with the windows down.”
The production follows the same synthy pop-rock pattern we heard on Stronger, but the lyrics are more poetic and singer-songwritery than the slick Greg Kurstin productions that filled that album. Just like My December, this is clearly Clarkson’s unfiltered vision and no one else’s.
“Catch My Breath” is pretty much perfect for a greatest hits single. It’s a summation of Clarkson’s life and career up until this point, sentimental and meaningful, and with the kind of emotional honesty that the “Never Again” singer delivers more earnestly than all of her pop peers put together. It probably won’t gain her any new followers or sell 4 million copies like some of her other hits, but longtime fans will love and appreciate “Catch My Breath” more than anything else the songstress could have possibly ever released.
Get into it below.
