The Hunger Games was pretty good. Well made, and well acted. It deserves all the success, and I might actually read the books.

I'm going to watch Hunger Games tonight. Wow, they completed dominated this weekend at the box office! I can't wait till Dark Knight Rises.

It'd be amusing if Avengers doesn't open to more than THG. I don't think that's happening since there's little competition and it has 3-D but still.

The Avengers is not opening bigger than THG. I think thats pretty much a given.

That's higher then all the Twilight's, and all the Harry Potter's except for DH Part 2.

Both movies are the most anticipated of the year, they will easily open bigger than THG

I think TDKR will beat The Hunger Games. But TA doesn't have a chance imo, it doesn't have the universal appeal you need for a massive opening like this.

The Avengers will be big, but I'm not sure it will do $155m + opening weekend. It does have 3D pricing working in its favor.

The Dark Knight Rises could and may opening bigger. It's the only movie I see this year with a chance of opening higher.

Dark Knight Rises is going to break the opening weekend record.

It won't have the overseas pull to do that, I don't think. The next films probably will, though.

'Hunger Games' gorges on $214 million global debut

(Reuters) - Post-apocalyptic action movie "The Hunger Games" opened with a staggering $155 million at U.S. and Canadian box offices, beating Hollywood's lofty expectations and making history as the third-highest domestic film opening.

Internationally, the Lions Gate Entertainment drama about an oppressive society's teen death match added $59.3 million from 67 markets for a global haul of $214.3 million.

The massive U.S. and Canadian debut for the film ranked behind only last summer's "Harry Potter" finale and 2008 Batman movie "The Dark Knight," Lions Gate said.

The movie's success brings the first blockbuster franchise to Lions Gate, a smaller Hollywood studio best known previously for the "Saw" horror series and comedian Tyler Perry's films.

"Hunger Games" set records for highest opening of a non-sequel film and biggest debut outside the summer blockbuster season.

"The first movie in a franchise, to post a number like this, is really insane. There is no other word for it," said Phil Contrino, editor of Boxoffice.com.
