Basically, Whitney's sound was universal because she combined pop and gospel vocals into one style. She fused the schools of Aretha and Streisand together. She knew when to bring the church in and when to float with the melody like a pop singer. So people were impressed by her gospel style, but weren't alienated by it because of the pop sheen in her singing.

It's Whitney..powerful, interpretative, emotional..Aretha has yet more interpretation and depending on what you want to hear in a singer she is on the same level as Whitney..

As for Mariah..I love her..but..she hasn't and never had the full security and fun live..her interpretation are album-quality but often not adding nothing new..too focus on doing her runs and whistle perfectly (which she did) but as a live performer..she's colder than W & A..

Christina..great voice but uncomparable even on W, A & M worst days..

Not even going to post a video because, to be honest, I'm not sure I can trust the "live" performances - I don't know when the lipping starts.

There's not much to say at this point, is there? The most vocally talented child I've ever heard, one without precocity or preciosity, and with a soul much older than his chronological age, blossomed into the most influential male pop music will ever see. The voice is the foundation of all of it.

I wouldn't have Mike in my top 5, personally, but I think he's pretty underrated as a vocalist. I remember when I was in high school and we performed "Beat It"...you really don't know how hard those high notes are to hit until you actually try it.

Michael's voice was great as an adult too. The way he could emote and show vulnerability but strength at the same time was amazing. He could convey sadness in his voice, then show anger and pain at the same time. He was a vocalist in my opinion.

Those are all emotions, which are subjective.
I don't know of him too much as a live performer to assess his actual vocal skill, that's all.
He doesn't come off as one in my opinion.
