Objectively speaking, it kinda does.
Think of it this way - songs that are 'catchy,' with a great hook and melody are obviously enjoyed by enough members of the GP to the point that it's sold over 5 million copies WW. Let's use Taylor's 'Blank Space' as an example for this theory.
A song becomes popular because a
lot of people enjoy listening to it, so much to the point that it blends in and out of different music tastes, ages, and demographics. Doesn't a song
have to be of some veritable quality for SO many people to enjoy listening to it?
The melodies, the wordplay, the hooks - all of it matters when crafting a song that people will enjoy. Isn't the fact that so many people are enjoying it enough to merit the fact that, again, objectively speaking, it's a "good quality" song?
