I don't like to get melodramatic, but this single was important. Had it smashed, she'd have gotten 2 more singles out of the album, sold the tour, probably given herself some collab awards, cushioned the blow of underperformance/mixed reviews and given her a much better platform to build upon for the next album.
As it happens, we're now in the land of uncertainty. I have very little hope for Venus being a moderate hit at best, Gypsy could go either way and whilst Sexxx Dreams should be a great single...there's little incentive for radios to take the risk of risqué if her singles are flopping. With only 1 and 1/2 hits selling the album and a campaign fizzling out prematurely...there isn't much selling tour tickets.

It was important but DWUW was never the be all, end all. The song is still nearly platinum, still being played on radio, and as of right now still doesn't have a video, which they're still editing.
Avoidable? I don't think so. At least not on Gaga's part. Gaga couldn't avoid Troy pushing to change the single at the last minute to coincide with the BEATS commercial he put out. She was doing what fans have been telling her to do by listening to the label and doing what they said. Fans can't be like, "she needs to stop having an ego and listen to her label" one minute and then complain when she does and it doesn't work out. Gaga also couldn't avoid the onslaught of RIDICULOUS media attacks being thrown her way. We all know she doesn't deserve those kinds of lashings but she got them and there's nothing she can do.
As on right now, she is recouping and getting things back on track. I don't know if you know this, but cleaning up a lot of **** after your manager left is kind of hard for a popstar of Gaga's size. We cannot expect her to jump back on her feet in a week and be like, "let's go". Do you want her to situate things so the future runs seamlessly or continue with no plan?
