Um, BABYMETAL is brand new artist and Kuu is on the edge of legend status (which she probably won't reach at this rate). Those numbers are tragic for someone of her status, especially since Japan still sells albums

Japan still sells AKB48 albums. Not much else. Do your research.

What you said goes in Kuu's favor though. Japan moves through their stars very fast, especially solo female artists. These numbers don't detract at all from what Kuu has accomplished and these days the media only looks at the peak position anyway. Kuu still has her 15th anniversary left next year and she can do some great things if things are handled properly.

Well there certainly was competition like Alex said with BABYMETAL and the fact that they're new is exactly why they ideally would be selling more than someone who's been in the industry for 13 years. See: Kana Nishino slaying our favs since she debuted in 2009. Super Junior's subunit was also very much a threat seeing as kpop groups actually have established fanbases that will bulk buy and make sure their favs chart on Oricon, Kuu is more for casual fans and if Oricon counted digital sales she would do so much better

Yeah 46k is pretty abysmal but the fact that she's still able to get a #1 this far into her career with a mediocre album still is impressive

It's been over 2 years since JAPONESQUE which is why it looks like a larger drop. Ayu dropped from 98k to 53k (2012 to 2013) so I don't think it's terrible at all to see Kuu go from 93k to 46k over 2 years. I don't blame the drop from JAPONESQUE to BV completely on the market but you can't deny it has a big part in it. Like new evolution said 46k isn't great but it's still very impressive to see her be able to get a #1 album 14 years into her career at a time like this.

Are you guys even thinking about the fact that if Utada started churning out new singles in over a 1-year time span that the album following up would really sell a lot more than 46k? Utada Hikaru is no doubt a bigger star but times have changed and she's also faded from being gone for so long so she really would not be bringing Adele 21 realness like her fans really think she does. Sales don't come out of thin air, people need money to be buying music and in today's economy people think there are more valuable things than music. The only reason why Japanese artists used to be able to sell so much was because of the strong economy the country had but it's no longer like that and female soloists just aren't in anymore

None of the Kuu stans anywhere have been saying she's been "slaying" sales-wise besides maybe a couple of joke posts on Tumblr. However sales don't change her ability to slay live performance or music so they can rightfully continue to talk about how Kuu slays the basic artists in your sig.

I was referring to tumblr and other music forum sites. "the basic artists in your sig" only need they're voices to sell music unlike Kuu

You may have had somewhat of a point if Kuu didn't have dozens of hit ballads and couldn't sing.
