I will admit Mariah can come off more "rehearsed" just due to how eerily perfect she was live, but she never sang a song the same way twice, even if she never quite got lost in it. She had a great sense of melody, and 99.9% of the time knew when something would fit melodically.
They all have their strengths. Mariah very rarely adlibbed or riffed and hindered or destroyed the melody like the women that have come after her (Hello Christina!) do on a regular basis. Her sense of musicality is impressive.

Maybe because she's also a writer, so she knows her way around a song (and her own songs) better than a pure vocalist would.

I wouldn't say it's more diverse, she's pretty much the only one of her generation right under them as far as diversity goes. She understands what the composition of a blues piece is supposed to sound like, she understands the nuances of a jazz record, she knows how to interpret a rock song to where it fits her own personal voice. She has a deep understanding of music which by far surpasses all of her peers. Especially live.

Aretha Franklin didn't write "Respect" and "You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman," but she interpreted, emoted, and really sculpted the song better than the songwriter could (even though Otis's version is great also).
