I felt so good about my entry, but then I looked at the other ones, and everyone looks like they did really well.
And I actually mean this, not like the first few rounds where y'all were LYING about everyone's entry being good.

I admire your approach to this trinity. Instead of going for something traditionally “dark”, you created a cynical, harshly realistic portrait of a young closeted gay man (one that really tears at the heartstrings, I might add).
I honestly couldn’t tell whether this was autobiographical or whether you were just writing from the perspective of a character- and trust me, that’s a good sign. I have a feeling that it’s the former, so let me say that you aren’t obligated to be the person your parents expect you to be. You’re a human being, not a doll for your parents to decorate and accessorize. If they get upset and angry at you for not living up to some arbitrary standard, then they’re bad parents.
And damn, I think this is the first time I’ve heard a bonafide tearjerker from Sia.
Temporal
You have a good idea here, but the tone is kind of inconsistent. You chose to analyze three different ways that the concept of “purity” manifests itself in nature, which was creative, and I commend you for that. However, the melodic, whimsical tone of the piece is interrupted by awkward jokes about Beyonce’s Grammys and shameless stanning (though in all fairness, Ellie does have quite a voice). On top of that, you don’t really explain how sexuality represents purity; all you say is that it’s not necessarily impure.
Kingie
I’m afraid I don’t really get this one. My first guess is that it’s an examination of the life of three different generations of women from a feminist perspective, with the twist that they’re witches. Okay… but the second and third generation entries seem to take place during roughly the same time period, since the second one mentions Pinterest and the third one mentions Twitter and Buzzfeed. Meanwhile, the first one clearly takes place during the mid-20th century, when women were just starting to enter the workforce.
I think it would have made more sense if you started out with a suffragist witch from the 20’s, then moved on to a witch from the 60’s entering the workforce, and then wrapped it up with a millennial witch. Like Temporal, your idea had potential, but the execution was kind of sloppy.
That, and I’m not really feeling your song choices. Why choose Ratchet Behavior as the theme song for the middle-aged working mother?
Witch Privilege
Ooh, spooky! Now I see why they call you Witch Privilege.
I’m a total Halloween nerd with a soft spot for ghost stories and spooky urban legends, so I loved your entry immediately. You did a fine job briefly explaining each legend and how it relates to its respective song, and you pointed out some details that I honestly never would have noticed otherwise (like Gaga’s repetitions during the chorus symbolizing the Bloody Mary ritual).
Hugamari
This is probably going to blow your mind, but I don’t hate O.M.G. Production- wise, it’s pretty solid, and I especially like that ominous growling synth chord right at the beginning. If someone like Britney performed it, then it might have been a solid bop that I could listen to guilt-free. The video, on the other hand, is completely reprehensible and everyone involved in its production is probably a child molester.
Now, as for the trinity as a whole… I’ll be honest, I expected better from you. I appreciate your attempt to tie them together, but it seemed like you were just saying the same thing three times (these kids are minors and they’re singing about sex and other adult things, ew, cringe, etc.).
On top of that, you talk a lot about the videos but not much about the actual songs, which is disappointing, especially since you chose Skip Rope as your third song. Yeah, the video is pretty shamelessly awful, but there are other things you could have talked about, like the nonsensical lyrics, the shrill, squealing synth that overpowers the entire song, the two girls’ complete lack of charisma or likability, the melody that sounds like it was composed by a five-year-old with no arms trying to play the piano for the first time…
Jpow
Full disclosure: I didn’t get to see your entry until Friday night, and I was super burnt out, so I’m sorry if my judging here isn’t as detailed as it usually is.
I liked your entry! You clearly did a lot of research for this one (unless you just know a lot offhand about religious art, in which case, props for that), and it was kind of cute how you applied light, fluffy pop songs to one of the gravest moments in the Bible. Really makes the Last Supper feel like a Sunday brunch at Denny's!

Nice job picking songs, In Time felt really appropriate for a dark trinity. The story was an interesting take on "dark" too.

These gifs serving LSD. It was a unique approach to "pure" for sure, since I was expecting ethereal songs and stuff, but I felt like you could've done a bit more with making the entry feel cohesive? Like it could've benefitted from a central theme or something.
Kingie
I liked your presentation and interpretation. I kind of wish it was a little bit more... fun.
Witch
It's an interesting premise and you really stepped it up overall but I wish it was a bit more unique.
Hugamari
I liked the idea but I actually think that it needed to be fleshed out a bit more. Also poor Punch!
jpow
I'm glad someone tried the art trinity! You had an interesting interpretation of your particular piece, and did a good job of picking songs too.

fireaero - So I already talked to you about this but yeah this is something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately. I’ve been very privileged and my sexuality was usually not an issue for other people but I did struggle with it for a long time. I was actually in the closet when I first joined ATRL and for a while after that. And I feel a very similar way about guys, that it’s something I’ll never really have. Hookup culture for whatever reason just really scares me, and I’m not into it. I would say, though, don’t believe everything the media (which is controlled mostly by straight white men) says about the gay community. Being gay is not just about hookups and going nude to pride parades. You can talk to me one on one anytime. But anyhow, I really appreciate you bearing your soul like that, especially because you’re not normally the type to do so (at least as far as I know).
Temporal - Nice song choices, nice idea and the gifs are beautiful. I really like you included sexuality, and the song was a great song to express what you meant. For a pure trinity, I didn’t really like the tone you used. The first song descriptions name-dropped genitalia, nuclear war and Beyonce’s Grammys? Idk your writing didn’t really fit what you were going for.
Kingie - This was very solid. I like the creativity. You are I’m pretty sure the first contestant to ever upload a song they were using to VOCAROO of all places dd. But this was a little flat, and I was trying to figure out what it is. I think it was that you were just telling us all these generational differences when showing us with hypothetical situations would have been more engaging. Also, I’m not sure I really understand how the songs fit.
Witch Privilege - This also was really solid. The song choices were good and were very sonically cohesive while each bringing something unique as well. I do think, though, that this wasn’t really all that exciting of an idea. It didn’t really take the idea of a Dark Trinity anywhere past its surface. Also, this wasn’t the biggest deal in the world but you kind of wrote it like you were writing for the MLA organization, or as an English dissertation.
Hugamari - I can kind of tell you did this last minute. The concept was good but for a humourous entry some of the jokes were missing the mark. Some parts were funny, like “edgification” and R. Kelly, but for other things I wasn’t even sure if they were jokes, like the hebephilia part.
jpow - I’m in love with this idea, and you did a great job with it. My favorite part is how all these Biblical figures have this gay ass pop music, which I’m guessing was not intentionally humourous but **** it because it was and I got my life. And I really like you didn’t try to explain every song choice; you did the perfect amount of writing.

Congrats to fireaero, jpow and Kingie! You three have all made it to the finale!!! Woooooooooo!!
You three will be discussing together and deciding on one Flop Trinity member to eliminate. You can choose from Witch Privilege, Temporal and Hugamari. You will not be choosing a player for immunity.
Please PM me your decisions within 24 hours.
I just want to reiterate that it truly is with a heavy heart that anyone is in the Flop Trinity. While I do absolutely refuse to have no elimination, lots of you really stepped it up and there were no entries I looked at and thought "This is going in the Flop Trinity." So whatever happens you should be proud, and don't shoot the messenger!

By the way.... the graph linked is a little deceiving. I just averaged everyone's rankings, and things are really close, especially when I drop your worst round like i will in the finale.

Congrats to everyone in the GT! I figured it was only a matter of time before I found myself in the Flop Trinity, and you know...I'm not really upset. I've already won once and I was surprised Tymps. even let me in to begin with. I'm sure there wasn't even any doubt as to who you guys were going to pick, but I completely understand your decision.
Good luck in the finale.
