It outsold The Sims 2. So, it can't be doing that bad.
The Sims 3 was "more of the same" as The Sims 2, including the same engine. People were okay with it because it was still in the same lane as 2. Same animations, same concept. Just open, more customization and better (in most cases) artstyle.
The Sims 4 had an unwelcome reception, because it veered into a different direction.
That said, when Urbz came out, it was hated badly and the cancelled the sequel. Now it's considered a fan favourite, and people have been begging for the sequel.
Castaway suffered the same fete. People hated it, now they want a sequel.
When it comes to The Sims, people
always want more of the same. That's why when new games start, people want the same expansions over and over. They rarely want new ideas.
The Sims 4 isn't the best Sims game, but it does well in what it set out to do. It's not The Sims 2/3 because it isn't trying to be, and people want it to be.
) They give us Seasons or University Life - or anything really that makes the game feel more alive.
