It was only a matter of time.
Let's start with the breakdown, this is the definition of iconic. While people remember songs like Trick Me or Caught Out There every now and then or get their life when they get played for a throwback, this is the one that still gets referenced often today. #3 in the US, her biggest hit there ever, #2 in the UK and Australia, Top Ten throughout Europe and #1 in Ireland #irishgirlsrepresent
This is, was and always will be her signature hit, the song associated with her name and what everyone will immediately think of when you mention Kelis. A gigantic hit that propelled her from semi-obscure shouting girl to an actual star. Without Milkshake would we have gotten everything that followed?
This song IS Kelis. It's fun and flirty and bursting with character, but still silly and presented with tongue firmly in cheek. All the while that perfect production bubbles under her. The reason it is still referenced today is because it is so ridiculous and regardless of how many ATRLers shut it down, no one else then or now would release something like this and as a result... Well, tell me how many of those girls' hits from that time people remember?
Seems that nobody wanted it to win but no one could bring themselves to sabotage, from
Diarrhoea, "I don't particularly want this to win, but it's amazing and I don't have the heart to sabotage it, so yeah. A great signature hit.", to
Latinazza, "I wanted to give it a low score as I imagine everyone else is scoring it highly, but it still sounds so good."
Doogle calls it "the song that ended heterosexuality for good." Amen, Kelis saving the world once again.
Closing with
ECNEICSNOC's perfect summary, "Yeah, I know fans probably resent Milkshake because it's so ubiquitous but honestly, this song perfectly captures Kelis' blend of quirkiness and sensuality. How could anything else be her signature song?"
