This is still better than every other album that's been mentioned. Yes, that includes Sign O The Times, Voodoosus and The Velvet Bible.
Peace Beyond Passion: Passionate is the perfect word to describe Meshell Ndegeocello's sophomore album. After a minute and a half long jam intro, the very first words she utters are "Jesus cured the the blind man/ So that he could see the evils of the world/ Perchance blindness/ Is but dark thought/ Overcome by the light" and never does her in-your-face personality subdue itself. Whether speaking about the potential evils of religion (The Way), homophobia at it's most extreme (Leviticus: ******), core-shaking lust (Bittersweet, A Tear and a Smile), or a childhood full of pain (Make Me Wanna Holler) Meshell's beautifully articulates the triumphs and low points of a Black woman trying to make sense of the White man's world in which she lives.
