Hahah, what you just described is "Magic and Wizards".
That was the first concept of Duel Monsters, the one that appeared for the first time on the Manga Episode 9. Then the first anime also featured like 3 episodes with that game.
Then in the Manga that game involved into what we know now as Duel Monsters, and Konami stopped making Magic and Wizards cards and started making the cards we play now.

Zexal Drinking Game
-Every time somebody says Kattobingu, take a shot.
-Every time somebody says a variation of Kattobingu, take two shots.
-Every time somebody Xyz Summons on their first turn, take a shot.
-Every time somebody Xyz Summons a Number, take a shot.
-Every time Astral says to Yuma "Here it comes!" when the enemy has 2 or more same LV monsters, take a shot.
-Every time Yuma summons Hope, take a shot.
-Every time somebody Chaos Xyz Changes, take a shot.
-Every time Yuma and Astral become ZEXAL, down the glass in one shot.
-Every time Orbital Seven says Kaito-Sama, take a shot.
-Every time IV says FANSERVICE, take a shot.
-Every time there's an echo effect when a character says something "important", take a shot.
-Every time a Duelist gets blown away miles of distance just because they lost 100 LP, take a shot.
-Every time Yuma's friends say their phrases: "Ura", "To Summarize" and "Catto", take a shot.
-Every time Kotori is the focus of a useless scene, take a shot.
-Every time someone plays a Trap card to counter the enemy's Trap card, then the enemy counters that one with other Trap card that ends up negated by yet another Trap card, take a shot. Take two if other trap card is activated to negate the 4th one, which is more common.
We would be drunk as hell just into 2 minutes of a duel.

Yu-Gi-Oh! DM by faaaaaaaaar.
Half of GX is baaad, it was meant just as a marketing strategy to keep on promoting the cards, then when the arc of Yubel started it became a good show.
Anyway I watched it and it's enjoyable, but it didn't have a plot most of the time, just random duels to promote Archetypes cards. 
This is my list of favorite series:
1.- 5D's: The best plot, dark and mature, everything about it was amazing.
2.- DM: Of course, the original.
3.- GX: Cool duels, but starting at Yubel Arc it became amazing.
4.- Zexal: Childish, repetitive, duels are a mess and the same each time. Actually the only reason I watch it is the plot, seriously, I never thought that I'd rather to skip the duels only to watch the scenes where they are talking about the plot, lol.

I've never watched 5D's nor Zexal. And France never broadcasted the end of Yu-Gi-Oh! DM nor GX Actually, I don't know how both end But I'm planning to watch these finales soon
And i'm gonna watch 5D's then.

1 thing I forgot to say.
I don't watch the Dubbed versions, I watch the Japanese versions.
The Dubbed versions are completely censored on each aspect, the soundtracks is completely changed to a lessor one.
I hate the dubs, besides the story line is completely changed to stupid things like "heart of the cards" and "shadow realm" and things like those. 
The Shadow Realm doesn't exist, where people where sent with Bakura's power was the actual Hell. Arcana never tried to send Yugi to that Realm in their duel, he tried to cut Yugi's legs to kill him.
Marik never tried to get the Milleniom Puzzle, he only wanted to kill Yugi.
Dub version sucks. And don't get me started on the 5D's version.
5D's original plot shows how every villain dies in horrible ways and get revived as Dark Signers... in the Dub they never die and only "join" the club of Dark Signer... like

When i was watching the original series. I was thinking about how there should be a drinking game every time Anzu said "yugi"
Every time they cut to her, i knew it was gonna be "yugi" in that soft worried voice

Oh 
are you sure? there were actual duel monsters though and everyone from the show was there...mai, insect guy, dinosaur guy, water guy, etc.
are magic and wizard cards the "normal" cards??

you mean you watch with subtitles?
I just looked on the Internet and the last few episodes of GX aren't available in French anyway, only in Japanese with french or english subtitles

I was so addicted when watching it. I watched like 10 episodes a day sometimes 
GX looks to "flashy" and idk...i don't like the vibes i get from it for some reason.

I still remember so much details of the show, some duels, some places... I hadn't realized how much I was addicted to Yu-GI-Oh before until now

Magic and Wizards are the same cards (the old ones). It was the first concept of Duel Monsters. It appears in the Manga as one of the games Dark Yugi won. Then as the manga advances it starts to concentrate more in that game because Kaiba holds it against Yugi. Eventually the game evolves into Duel Monsters as we know it now. Actually in Yu-Gi-Oh! DM the duelist kingdom arc has a lot of rules of Magic and Wizards. 2000 LP, no direct attacks, magic cards could be activated in any player's turn, Fusion monsters weren't cards, Normal Monsters had effects, you didn't need to tribute anything for 5 or higher level monsters, Flying monsters had advantage of walking monsters, etc.
Then starting in the Battle City arc Kaiba "changes" the rules and it becomes officially what we know as duel monsters.

Yes.
Well, with duels I don't need subtitles because I know each dueling word in Japanese.
It's so much fun haha.
But yeah, Japanese is so much better, the soundtrack is so intense, you should give it a try.
Dub version of 5D's is a big NO NO NO NO NEVER WATCH.
