I may have been a bit harsh on this album in the past, truthfully I like it a lot. It's a Kelis album so of course it's good. I disagree with people who undersell her early albums in favour of Flesh Tone or this but they're all really great works.

The problem I, and others, have raised with Food is the lack of highlights. It feels though it simmers along the whole time, being inoffensive. The truth is that there are great moments littered throughout the record, they just aren't as flashy and attention-drawing as her past work. There's no yelling or screaming or whirring or jamming sounds. It's a truly organic album so of course it would sound a little damp next to the rest of her work.

There are highlights all over this record, the soaring hopefulness on Breakfast, the triumphant horns on Jerk Ribs, the utter strangeness of Change showing she's still not afraid of exploring, the piano riff on Rumble and the starry eyed callback of Dreamer. That's just a brief taste of the highlights on Food. Yes, some songs can risk sounding samey but that's fair on an album as real as this one. This is an album of songs Kelis can play live in some kitchen in 40 years time and still have the same effect they have now. It's a reflection of where she is presently, she can't always be 'Milkshake' or 'Bossy' era Kelis.

This is not a "return to old Kelis" just because it is back to R&B sounds, but instead it is her continued exploration into new sounds and different ways of making music and for that I am truly thankful. If this had truly been her last album as we feared then it would be a fine send-off.

Me too! I feel like I gave the top 10 all 9/10's except Flashback which got a 2 (I think). I'd be happy with any but that or Milkshake winning, I know it's iconic and all but so predictable

Honestly, I wouldn't be mad with any of 7-1 winning tbh, they're all 10/10's, only Millionaire and Flashback look weird to me in the top 10....but everyone thought Intro was out of place in the top 20 so maybe my Kelis taste is...different (read:better)
