Steve Dixon, the 1982 Coronado High grad who is Britney Spears' tour director, said the former teen pop queen and her 45-member cast weren't just pasting on those smiles during Monday's sold-out show at the Don Haskins Center.

The venue was the smallest on her current "Circus" tour, and the lavish show is designed for much larger arenas. But sometimes small isgood.

"The lights were so bright they could see the audience. They all had a blast. She was having a blast. It was the first time they could see the audience," Dixon said Monday. "She was really having fun."

Dixon, who was responsible for having the tour routed to his hometown, laughed that he insisted all along to his staff that the show would fit into the Don.

"The whole production team has been telling me since December, when we decided to do this production, that it won't fit. I ignoried them and said we'd make it fit. I told them (after we got here) that I'm really sorry for making you do this," he said, laughing. "I took the staff to Avila's the night before (the show). I told them that was a thank you."

Spears didn't spend the night in town, Dixon said. Stars of her magnitude often base out of a city, then fly to gigs in the region, before moving on to the next base. But she did get some local flavor, munching on some Avila's Mexican food for dinner while her two sons played nearby in his production office.

Dixon's worked on every Britney tour going back to the first one in 1999. He said the singer is definitely back and hinted that "the new record she's working on now" could surprise some people.

So, since we're nearing the end of this fantastic decade in music I've been doing some research on different artists to see who might get the much coveted Artist of the Decade Award.

It seems almost a given Eminem will get the award. he has five #1 albums, two #1 songs and like twenty charted songs total for this decade. The Slim Shady LP also spent about 50 weeks in the 2000's on the Billboard 200 but it only rose to a peak of about #25 in June 2000.

The we have Britney. four #1 albums, one #1 song, and eighteen (soon to be nineteen) charted songs this decade. However, ...Baby One More Time was still in the top 10 (#6) of the Billboard 200 in January 2000, so 50 weeks of its chart run counts toward this decade. I'm thinking [praying] Britney will at least be top 3 and she'll probably be the top female of the deacde as well.

And to think some stans thought their faves had a chance.
