Sia: Your essay was kinda messy and lost its point. also a bit vague. i liked the song tho
Carly: Sorry MLD but im not seeing how this song connects to what you said. you may not have been in the relationship but i'm sure you've felt like one with crushes and stuff. I've never been a 'real' established as relationship but i picked 'You Are In Love' anyway cause ive felt it. maybe Almost Said It would've worked?
Britney: well your story while cute didn't seem very nostalgic at all however, i doubt you care cause you're off to do bigger and better things anyway. congrats, and good luck as you start this new exciting chapter *Welcome To New York plays in the background*

JONAH!
But that's not something I'm nostalgic about. I had a crush on the only male cheerleader our school had (at the time). Everyone thought he was gay. He was a freshman, I was a junior and well, my gaydar pinged on him so I ended up liking him but he didn't like me back. However, he also didn't say anything about being straight, so I was left to wonder. I almost asked him out to formal (because some backstabbing manipulating cheerleaders talked me into it) but I didn't go through with it. Then for awhile he deleted me off Facebook but we became friends on it again in May 2011. And then eventually we managed to get along, but there was always a wall between us that I Just felt never truly went away.
He came out of the closet a year after I graduated. But I felt like the whole crush thing ruined a possible friendship I could have made with him.
I don't feel nostalgic over that. It's something I wish I could have handled a lot better because I think I put a lot of pressure on him. I was really popular in school at the time so everyone knew I liked him and everyone was questioning his sexuality. I think he disliked me because of it.

“Little Me” has the exact same meaning for me! I went through bullying in school too and it affected me really hard, it took me some time to become who I am today. I still have some scars, but I’ve grown a lot! Such a special song, I’m feeling so connected to you right now!
2. Penk - Kimbra - The Golden Echo: Carolina – 9/10
Pretty solid entry, I have nothing to criticize, you did a good job.
3. Dollas n Diamonds - Taylor Swift - 1989: You Are In Love – 7.5/10
I’m confused. I thought you were talking about an ex-boyfriend, but the summer of 2009 chapter gives me the impression you were in love with your best friend, who is straight, so you never dated him. Which one is the correct interpretation? I can see the song fitting both interpretations, but I have to take some points from you due to the confusing essay.
4. Yvess - Avril Lavigne - Under My Skin: Fall To Pieces – 10/10
It must be really hard to love someone, but know you don’t work together. I think you did a great job connecting the song to your story.
5. holyground - Lorde - Pure Heroine: 400 Lux – 4/10
Here’s how I see your entry: you’re talking about the present, the song describes what you enjoy doing with your friends, but you do those things with them since you were a teenager, so you tried to link that as something nostalgic. However, if you still do those things, it’s not really nostalgic.
6. SailorMoon - Britney Spears - Oops!... I Did It Again: Lucky – 9/10
Wow I didn’t expect to read a story of competition and jealousy like that when I saw you picked Lucky. I’m glad you overcome these feelings and are still friends with Jillian. The connection between song and essay is good, you surprised a lot.
7. Luigi - Janet Jackson - The Velvet Rope: Got 'Til It's Gone – 10/10
I know exactly what you’re talking about, I feel the same way every now and then. You did a good job.
8. Starships - Miley Cyrus - Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus: You And Me Together – 9.5/10
Really good job. I thought you were going to say you miss your friend.
9. Prismatic - Katy Perry - PRISM: Double Rainbow – 8.5/10
Your entry didn’t standout among the others, but you did a good job, I don’t have anything in particular to criticize.
10. MusicLoverDude - Carly Rae Jepsen - Kiss: Tonight I'm Getting Over You – 2/10
Despite the fact it’s a dance song, I don’t see how it connects to your story. The song is about a relationship, trying to get over a guy, and your story is about how you used to enjoy going to the school dances and have fun with everyone else.
11. Bloomers - Baroness - Yellow & Green: Stretchmarker – 6/10
At the same time I see where you’re coming from, I think your entry is a bit lazy. It feels like you picked the instrumental and came up with that explanation just because your album doesn’t have any other lyric that would fit this challenge.
12. Already Gone - Sia - 1000 Forms of Fear: Fair Game – 3.5/10
So you’re still going through those problems with your friends, right? If you’re still living the situation, it’s not something “nostalgic” or that was left behind in the past. I don’t think you did what the challenge asked you to.
13. Capital B - Alanis Morissette - Jagged Little Pill: Head Over Feet – 9/10
I know exactly what you’re saying, I always feel nostalgic when I hear a song or see a video I used to enjoy when I was a kid, a lot of memories instantly come to my mind. I liked your interpretation of falling in love with music.
14. Pedro - Shakira - Shakira.: 23 – 2.5/10
First of all, a song doesn’t necessarily have to be old to be nostalgic, it can be a new song that talks about something that brings back memories from your past. That being said, it seems to me “23” gives you hope and makes you wish someday you’ll find true love like Shakira did, it’s not nostalgia tho. You’re talking about what you wish for the future and not what you remember from the past. I love this song to death, it pains me to give you a bad score.

I went through the exact same thing. Everything you put in this entry reminds me of middle school and all the awful things I went through, too.

2. Penk - The Golden Echo
Ugh, I love your imagery. It's really sweet and definitely encapsulates that nostalgic feeling.
10/10
3. Dollas N Diamonds - 1989
Your personal details were gorgeous, but I just feel like it needed a little more focus on the song. Just something to bring your whole nostalgia trip full circle.
8/10
4. Yvess - Under My Skin
This would've been absolutely perfect with a small story or something to make it more personal. I just find it hard to relate the way the it is.
7.5/10
5. holyground - Pure Heroine
I love everything you said about it. It helps that I understand this feeling immensely, but amazing job anyway.
10/10
6. SailorMoon - Oops!... I Did It Again
Your essay is a little clumsy because you didn't really describe the feeling the song evokes.
5/10
7. Luigi - The Velvet Rope
This was very sweet and very easy for me to relate to. I know this feeling all too well and your essay reminds me of what I loved about the carefree of my life.
10/10
8. Starships - Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus
This was everything I needed to find in an entry this round. You really nailed that feeling of nostalgia it brings you.
10/10
9. Prismatic - Prism
Very heartwarming. Your description of that nostalgic feeling was perfect.
10/10
10. MusicLoverDude - Kiss
I'm missing some connection to the song in your essay. It sounds like it could've been any old dance song that reminds you of those days.
4.5/10
11. Bloomers - Yellow & Green
Amazing imagery and description of how you really relate to this song.
10/10
12. Already Gone - 1000 Forms Of Fear
With how you relate in the past and present, it makes your essay a little jumbled. I found it hard to really feel your connection to the song.
5/10
13. Capital B - Jagged Little Pill
I feel like you could've included just a little more about the feeling the song gives you now. Your essay was amazing in its details, but I can't quite picture that feeling you get.
7/10
14. Pedro - Shakira
The album's time of release wasn't important in this. It was all about the feeling the song gives you and how it makes you think of an event in the past. Your entry didn't really give me that picture of being able to feel a moment again that happened in the past.
3.5/10

1. Little Mix – well explained, and I like how you compared it to your growth as an individual in the present day. I feel like it really wasn’t “nostalgic” though, because nostalgia is supposed to be about positive memories that we would want to experience again – 6/10
2. Kimbra – I love this entry, especially because I really, really want to travel myself. I haven’t gone to a lot of exotic places, but the road trips I have been on were amazing, and I totally feel you on the nostalgia thing with those trips. Great job! – 10/10
3. Taylor Swift – Nice story and tie-ins with the song. However, I feel like going with a memory of love/relationships is a cliché angle from which to approach this challenge. I am sure there are many other cool memories you have, even though this one was really cute. – 8/10
4. Avril Lavigne – Fall To Pieces is one of Avril’s best songs! I love it. However, the essay is a little off this week… I feel like avoiding the romantic route would have been a better way to go. I think a more happy topic would have been more appropriate for a round based on “nostalgia”… but you did explain how you long for those happy memories, so that works. – 8/10
5. Lorde – Much better than last week! This song is overrated in my opinion, but you explained it really well. I enjoy how you tied your explanation into your overall approach to this album – teen years, youth, and halcyon days. Great job! 9.5/10
6. Britney Spears – I am sorry that you will have to withdraw! Lucky is a really great song. I like the story that you told, but as with VDK, I don’t really think you hit the “nostalgia” theme on the head as hard as you could have. It was a little too broad, in my opinion, but it is better than last week at least. Good luck in school! – 7/10
7. Janet Jackson – I really love this entry. Growing up is an interesting rollercoaster ride, and it can definitely be difficult. I think that you illustrated your nostalgic feelings in a direct way, and you also explained why you feel that nostalgia today. Great job! – 10/10
8. Hannah Montana – Omg this entry is so cute. I love these vignettes, and how you directly connected the story to Hannah. Your concluding segment really hit the challenge on the head, as you explained your nostalgic feelings that you have today. Great job, and great song choice! – 10/10
9. Katy Perry – The most overrated song on PRISM… just throwing that out there. Anyway, I really love the nostalgic feeling you created in this essay! I love my grandmothers so very much, and I connected with you on that level. You explained your connection to the song well, and you also explained how you feel that nostalgia today. Great job! – 9.5/10
10. Carly Rae Jepsen – I really think you need to take a breath when people vote you off. It happens, and if you just clear your head in a more positive manner, it will be better for you. Sublimate your anger into great essays. Or maybe do some artwork at home. Idk. Anyway, I think you explained everything pretty well, especially your final sentence. That really ties up the story and relates it to the challenge. I think you could have gone a little deeper as to your experience at the dances. You skated around the edges a little, and I think you could have had a ten if you told me more about your emotions and feelings during the dances. – 9/10
11. Baroness – I am torn with this essay, because it describes a more abstract version of nostalgia. I think that you explained your emotions really well and I love days where I can just reflect and discover things about myself and the world. Overall, I think your explanation works quite well. – 9/10
12. Sia – I unfortunately was not convinced by your counterexample. This is definitely not a fond memory… I am sure that you have other memories that you can feel nostalgia for! 5/10
13. Alanis – I really like this approach to the challenge! It’s a very cute story. I think it might not completely fit under the nostalgia category, as you aren’t necessarily longing to repeat this moment in your life. However, this is a great memory and entry. – 9.5/10
14. Shakira – I like your essay, but I found that it did not explain “nostalgia” as well as I was hoping. I like how you used the lyrics to explain your feelings, but in my opinion, you could have taken a different approach to this challenge. I was looking for something more specific. I really love the “I miss love” statement at the bottom. Bonus points for the feels. – 8/10
MusicLoverDude - Carly Rae Jepsen - Kiss: Tonight I'm Getting Over You
The simplest, on point, no gimmick, no filler-lined essay recounts a period of having a blast to later miss it all, and every line puts forth statements or memories that trigger a bittersweet nostalgic feeling as we realise that it's all gone. Through this euphoric account of moments and feelings once shared and felt, we perceive Dancing as a metaphor for Living. We will dance again in our journey, but we will never dance the same way we did in our past. A track that scream Tonight I'm Getting Over You hits the dance button hard enough to bring you back to the dance floor, but ironically, the past memories associated to it is one to be treasured and remembered.
Prismatic - Katy Perry - PRISM: Double Rainbow
The sweetest essay of the pack goes through a period of sharing candy-filled moments with a loved one and its emotions, to later fade into prismatic memories. Double Rainbow can be seen through different hues, and in this case a time when childhood was brightly coloured with innocence, carefree-ness and happiness. Reminiscing about days that positively marked a time in our lives and thinking back on it when we are facing different times takes us from red to violet with a general and personal aspect of nostalgia, while Perry hints that such moments are 'once in a lifetime'.
Capital B - Alanis Morissette - Jagged Little Pill: Head Over Feet
Just like going through childhood photos, songs that were stuck in our little heads or videos that captivated us - reliving them now bring back a nostalgic feeling that seem lost but sweet. While most entries portrayed a past memory revisited while listening to a particular song, Head Over Feet serve such a purpose, but with a different approach in the sense that it takes you back within the song's world itself. A musical door was opened, and the impact was without a doubt too essential and grand for you not to feel nostalgic whenever you hear it.
Penk - Kimbra - The Golden Echo: Carolina
Trip tracks often have an indirect connection in the literal sense, but still drives us to a land of memories as we associate them to our own adventures. Carolina serves such a purpose, and is even reminiscent of one of my favorites - Mazzy Star's California. You described your nostalgia by using the senses of sight and sound, clearly drawing the picture of sharing good old days with your loved ones. Closing the vehicle's door on a note of 'fondly thinking' of those times is a bittersweet ending that makes this sentiment of nostalgia even more heartfelt and longing for another such trip.
Dollas n Diamonds - Taylor Swift - 1989: You Are In Love
This past is hurtful to you now, and I would normally not associate nostalgia with something that makes you feel the pain of the past, unless you love that feeling. And since you stated that you allow yourself the vulnerability when listening to You Are In Love, I would count it as missing the heartwarming, as well as the heartbreaking aspect of the relationship. At some point it felt like you built your narration based on the lyrics, but the overall sweet experience cannot be disregarded as un-nostalgic and it makes your bittersweet emotion for the past justifiable.
Luigi - Janet Jackson - The Velvet Rope: Got 'Til It's Gone
When we're old enough to lay back with a cup of coffee and think back on our life, this essay is the closest of what we will think of. Nostalgia tastes sweeter as we get older, and you encapsulated all the warmth of the good old days in between Got Til It's Gone's most telling lyric that touches right at this round's theme. The freedom, innocence and happiness that was once felt can only be longed for when we face harder times, and your regret for having taken those for granted is a bittersweet realisation that transform into a sense of nostalgia.
While Stretchmarker brings you back to a period where you were sick, withdrawn and down - and I wouldn't associate nostalgia to that phase - you brighten it with positivity and a realisation that makes the past worth reminiscing over. Looking at the person we've become, the past is often mentioned in our thankful notes, and in this case the past is circumstance-contasted with feelings of calmness and peace. You obviously wouldn't want to be bed-ridden again, and this is a case of feeling nostagic for the state of mind over the physical trauma, which you wisely balanced in your essay.
Yvess - Avril Lavigne - Under My Skin: Fall To Pieces
The ups and downs of your one true love story is highlighted in the essay, and since more emphasis were laid on the downside, the feeling of fondness of the past is cut short. Listening to Fall To Pieces reminds you of the bittersweet relationship, but I cannot fully consider it nostalgia since you feel sorry for having 'risked your heart, shared your lives and made memories together'. You did not mention that you love or miss the pain that the relationship brought, so I will have to ignore the cracks, and focus on the bright memories as the only nostalgic aspect.
holyground - Lorde - Pure Heroine: 400 Lux
Your definition of nostalgia is backed up through images of sharing good times with your friends, but only the middle account is the strongest part of the essay. Through repeated sentences expressing the same ideas of liberation and communion, the line between the past and the present is too thinly drawn to consider those experiences as meet-ups that are only existent in the past - and the present tense used may have given that away. 400 Lux reminds you of the moments that you share with your friends, but I wouldn't call it a hundred percent nostalgia yet.
Starships - Miley Cyrus - Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus: You And Me Together
You keep getting the comfort of writing more than the desired word limit, and in this case an overboard text of 301 words to associate your childhood story to the song's lyric, which is clever in context but exagerated in length. It's certain that you would feel nostalgic while listening to this song and the first two paragraphs mirror that, but the last one hold a honesty much stronger. The innocence, carefree-ness and happiness of our childhood is often missed and it was a nice approach to tangle general aspect to personal, making the nostalgia even more heartfelt when we realise that You And Me Together is not forever. Please stay within the word limit.
SailorMoon - Britney Spears - Oops!... I Did It Again: Lucky
Your essay had a direct approach, and it was a narration that would have fit more into the Relate-able / Personal round. Listening to Lucky makes you think back on the lucky and unlucky moments that you felt while comparing your life to your best friend's, but the overall story is too leaned towards the unlucky aspect to be fully considered as nostalgia. You made no mention of missing the struggles, therefore the good changes that happened after your graduation are the only instances I would count as nostalgia, despite the fact that you shadowed it with your discontentment.
Pedro - Shakira - Shakira.: 23
The age of the album is a non factor because the requirement was about a song that makes you reminisce about something in your earlier days, not about a song that is old. Listening to 23 makes you picture a past of unrequited love, a lonely present and a hopeful-for-love future, but unfortunately there was the least focus on the past and more on the present and future. Although the love you once felt was one-sided, it made you live and feel something positive for a while, and since you desire for such an experience again, the feeling of nostalgia is justified.
VDK - Little Mix - Salute: Little Me
Little Me is about the desire to go back in time to comfort and advise our younger self. Listening to the song will remind you of your bullied and confined past, but it's only a dark reminder that would fit the Personal round more, and is not a nostalgic feeling. Feeling nostalgic about your past would be something that you miss, or a moment that you would like to relive. Based on your scars that didn't heal, your past is a painful experience for you, and therefore cannot be associated with nostalgia unless you were a masochist. Since you stated that you underwent therapy, I deduce that you wanted to get over that phase, so it's not a case of pining for the past.
Already Gone - Sia - 1000 Forms of Fear: Fair Game
You put a red flag on the very opening sentence by saying that you connect the song to both your past and your present. You cannot feel nostalgic over something from the past that is still affecting your present. But that isn't the only downer. Your essay was focused on the downside of the relationship with your friends, and since you don't miss the way that they treat or treated you, I would count listening to Fair Game as a relatable song of bitter memories rather than feeling nostalgic. Feeling nostalgic would mean that you would like to relive them, which is not the case since you hope for a better future.
