JHENÉ AIKO
SOULED OUT. Honest. That’s a good way to describe the vocals of this chanteuse. It’s her delivery, the smooth and relaxed way she caresses every word that passes from her lips to our ears. She doesn’t force a note. When she sings “where I’m from, we live by they love, die by the love” in “To Love & Die” (featuring Cocaine 80s), you believe her. Aiko’s like your friend who can sing the ingredients from the cereal box and you stop to listen. “Pretty Bird” (Freestyle) is a song for gentle souls as she sings “pretty bird, please don’t cry, you can fly.” I imagine her in a dimly lit room, looking out the window, the pain in her heart palpable. This woman can emote with simple lyrics, complex lyrics, you name it. Go ahead and spend the money on this one.
