That's not entirely true.
Here's the point:
Britney and the quality of the song made it to #1 in 55 countries. That's not "isn't as big as she used to be" there are plenty of artists that can't and have not reached #1 on itunes and have put out songs over the past few years.
That's not the issue. Britney proved there is interest. It trending WW proved there is interest
HOWEVER, her team not having a video ready or proper promotion takes away the potential.
A banner should have been placed that day and if a video was being reshot or not released an interview talking about the new single and the video would have been sufficient.
This is where an artist pre streaming and pre digital sales could have a fighting chance.
She doesn't need to go on every award show or every press outlet.
That alone with a video no later than 1-2 weeks after the single release would have kept this song top 20 on itunes.
It's just a messy release for a great song at a very important time where we are already facing a pushback from a May release during a time where this era is make or break...either she will be able to maintain as a current pop star or she'll be a nostalgia act.
NOW IF SHE HAS A TOXIC prepped to follow up she can correct things...that's IF she has a toxic prepped.

If it is as messy of a release as Make me then yes but if it is planned better and is an uptempo song then it can have a stronger chance.
I say release the video August 5th.
Let August be about Make me the video. it'll boost streaming and sales for a little but and possibly radio interest.
Then prep September for filming video #2 and releasing it the week before the album comes out. So possibly filming the video mid August. It can be an uptempo song that is a hitworthy track. Perform it on the Iheart event
and things could turn around.
Won't happen because, her team DUH...but it can easily put things where they need to be
