It's also a matter of old players noticing whats "missing" from the game compared to the previous, instead of actually noticing whats been added instead.
New players don't know what's missing, so they play the game, and enjoy it. Not a whole lot is missing from The Sims 4 at this point, and when the game launched, there was still HEAPS of stuff that was new, but people ignored it for what wasn't there.
There was a popular list of 89 Features "Missing" from The Sims 4, but people ignored the list of 200+ features that were never done before, or never appeared in a base game before.
TL;DR - Older players focused too much on what wasn't there, and ignored the abundance of new content that was added instead.

EA said The Sims 4 would be more like the original game, than The Sims 2 and The Sims 3, but people were like "why is ______ that was in The Sims 2 and The Sims 3, not in The Sims 4?"
The Sims 1 and 4 have a lot in common, and The Sims 4 was compared to The Sims Bustin Out by many long time fans. But fans of The Sims 2 and 3, didn't really want a game like the Sims 1 days, and wanted a game that was built of Sims 2 and 3.
The first thing that was said about The Sims 4, was that it would going back to The Sims "Roots", which is Sims 1 and Sims Bustin Out.
For some reason fans believe The Sims "roots" is the Sims 2.
And it seems to be working. This is the first Sims game since the original, to be the best selling PC game 2 years in a row (Sims 2 and 3 didn't do it) and it's also the first Sims game since the original to sell significantly in it's second year according to EA. (The Sims 2 and 3 sold the majority of their lifetime sales in the first few months).
