Can someone tell me if this is true or not? I found out that gifting people a song (on iTunes) doesn't add towards the final sales because it's the same person buying them. Fact?

The Official Singles Chart has a specific rule, which disqualifies songs from charting when they are offered with the pre-order or something. DWUW is a prime example.
Unless you just meant dethroning them on iTunes....

I don't think any of the previous singles have been given away with a preorder of MMLP2 and since The Monster is the first, I think the sales count.
