I used the plays of the #50 song in each country and their population. I couldn't come up with a better mothodology but the results don't seem off at all. Perhaps using the #200 song would've been even more accurate.

This means Spotify has room to become about 6x as popular at LEAST in the US (then it would roughly match Sweden). Probably a lot more, since I assume there's room for Spotify to grow in Sweden as well.

It's more difficult to say for streaming overall though, because Spotify will have a different share of the streaming market in each country.

And yes, I think using the #200 song would be more accurate but it probably won't give very different results to using the #50.

And yeah, in US we have strong share of AM and Pandora. Some stats based on official data:

just going to point this out, spotify has essentially murdered all sales in scandinavia, which is why the entire top 3 is scandinavian I think like 95% of norwegian music industry revenue in 2015 was from streaming alone?

anyway, I'm unsurprised at spotify being so low in japan. the japanese market is largely CD-based… CD maxi singles have yet to die in japan. digital download has increased in japan but barely enough to say that physical is in danger in japan.

I want them to release in south korea and see how that goes. (I know that sounded a bit shady but it's genuine, honest.)

It's also good to note that a lot of Japanese music isn't available on Spotify because the labels there weren't willing to negotiate with the service.

mmm I think not. japanese-language music from actual japanese acts is largely unavailable on spotify because 1) it just came out there and 2) they already have their own streaming services, such as AWA music and line music. also 3) the bigger labels don't want to put the music there.

Impressed fact: 1.5m Norweigans paying for streaming services (end of 2015) - that's 29% penetration. In 2015 in US we had 10.8m subscribers - that's 3.4% penetration. If US hit Norway streaming level, we'll get +90m subscribers in US ALONE
