there weren't that many and the ratings dropped hard
people tune in when they see nominations for a movie they can root for, lbr Hollywood lives in its own bubble with these small movies that nobody sees and that's a big deal for ABC when it tries to sell ads

Trend wise all awards shows fell, but I don't think people would watch it anyway with ads running every 5 minutes and considering all the options on Sunday night just on TV and Netflix
Edit:
Quick fact, the last time a musical won. Good luck ABC
2004 43.531 Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
2003 33.043 Chicago
2002 41.782 A Beautiful Mind

yeah Its always small indie movies with limited release that get the noms... Last year a lot of people tuned in to see Leo winning for the first time lol I think that helped otherwise all the other winners were from indie/limited release. I guess only LLL and Arrival and Arrival is just a cute hit its not huge.

I'm glad the Oscars tend to shy away from blockbusters. Save it for the People's Choice Awards.
(The Grammys could learn a thing or two).

The Natalie vs Emma mess in here
What's with the Natalie obsession & the obsession to root for Emma Stone. Idgi
Portman's Jackie is actually a one-woman show so..... And I feel like, I'm not here for Stone to get an Oscar before some waaay talented people

Stone is a better actress and doesn't need a biopic or a dance double to showcase her talent. Her overall body of work is much stronger as well.

The blockbusters this year were mediocre to average at best sans Zootopia. None of them were really spectacular so it's no shock that the best film category will be filled with indie/unknown films.

This is absurd. What's a biopic gotta do with it. Yeah sure pretend it's the same thing as professional ballet. I'm not even gonna bother to argue about her award winning performance in Black Swan.

they asked the dance double not to give any interviews until after Oscars, even her PR team knew it was a sham

I could support Natalie & root for her to win without having to focus on what the other contenders lack of. Not that insecure. I just think the obsession is weird.

Everybody uses doubles for specific scenes, that's why doubles are for just in case people forget

My predictions :
BP : La La Land
BD : Barry J.
BLActor : Casey A.
BLActress : Natalie P
BSActor : Jeff B
BSActress : Viola D
La La Land won't get any acting award but will be the winner of the night ofc.

Natalie: Minghella, Aronofsky, Kar-Wai, Burton, Allen, Anderson, Malick, Lucas, Nichols
Emma: Iñárritu, Crowe, Allen
I mean, come on now. They're both great but let's not compare their careers. It's unfair to Emma.

La La Land will sweep and Stone will win. It's signed, sealed and delivered.

Natalie has been acting for much longer than Emma tho, plus Emma had a more comedy-leaning career

Portman has like two good movies. Who cares which directors she worked with if the projects suck? Like you literally listed her Lucas' Star Wars prequel trilogy as some kind of receipt. How are we supposed to take that seriously?

yeah well when you build the whole campaign about her becoming a professional ballerina in a year and ask the dance double not to say anything till after the Oscars I don't think anything else needs to be said about that performance

No bby girl, that's Emma. She has Birdman and Easy A, that's it.
Natalie has picked some terrible projects lately and even though her body of work is rather weak compared to her peers, newbies like Stone can't touch it. Well, they're not even obliged to.
And most of the projects Natalie did with those directors are acclaimed, so yeah.
