Snow and Charming may be bland, but they're needed to keep the balance of the show. I would like to see either a little more complexities added to their character though. This. Regina is my favorite (and probably always will be) but I've always wanted to like Emma more since she is the hero and protagonist. I do like her character but not as much as I would like.
For me Emma is suppose to be the savior yet she struggles all season long and only saves the day before the season ends. Literally the entire first season Emma gets beat by Regina time and time again while still not believing Henry after all the craziness. Then towards the end of season 1, she was going to admit defeat, leave the town, and let Regina win. Heroes don't quit. The only reason she didn't leave is because Henry poisoned himself which led her to believe. I wish the writers changed how they wrote Emma some and had her do more in the 22 episodes in a season instead of succeeding the final one.
