25. Estelle ft. Kanye West- American Boy (7.855)
Highest score: 10 x16 (Stevie, HaHa2011, Strangergab, JDella11, jqnetto, Glassheart, lovesong, conseeded, superben, Regina George, Kool_Aid_King, berberocka, VJoker, Flashing Lights, Konichiwa, MP2K)
Lowest score: 2 x2 (tell_me_a_lie, CrazyCat)
An unflattering picture of Estelle:
Estelle says of the song:
"We were just messing about in the studio, joking around. And John Legend just said to me 'Why don't you write a song about meeting an American boy?'. So I was like 'Well, that's pretty easy' - because I have a lot of male friends out there in New York. And I unwittingly ended up creating a new ladies' anthem! And Kanye basically just brought his own cheeky self to the track, his own sense of humour. At first he was like 'How can you rap over a dance beat?' - and now he's DONE it!"
No pretension, no name-dropping, no self-righteousness there. None at all.
It was produced by Will.I.Am (who knew he had talent?), and has been covered by everyone from Busta Rhymes to Fall Out Boy. It's also gone a wee bit viral, everything from Malaysian Boy to Canadian Boy being made in the song's honour. And it made #9 in the US Hot 100.
But we haven't heard from her since.
Jinzo's verdict: 3
Just the absolute definition of bland and mediocre. If Kanye wasn't there to spice it up a little, I would not be able to tell this track apart from a sh*tload of others that sound absolutely like it, just with a smaller budget. Absolute waste of a .mp3 file.

Lady Marmalade is so overrated
The others are decent positions.
EDIT: American Boy should've made it to the top 20 though

I forgot this was still in here. It overstayed its welcome, but I still like it.

"American Boy" is flawless, should be at least top 10.

And that's game, set and match for all the UK #1s of British girlgroups.
Keisha says of the song's story:
"I really liked this guy, so I'd be like, there's this good movie coming out, you know, dropping hints. And he'd be like, that movie sounds great, let me know what it's like if you go see it. I knew he liked me too but he just wasn't getting what I was trying to say. And Dallas (Austin, producer) was teasing me, saying, you've got to tell him to push that button or you're moving on"
So, it's essentially about being a wh*re.
It also made elevators (or as we call it in the UK, a "lift") sexy. Don't tell me you haven't pretending you were doing the Push the Button video things in a lift at least once in your life. Try it tomorrow. You'll feel a lot better.
They also "did a Keri" and promoted at Ikea:

Just straight out good. A shame to see it leave, but I had absolutely no idea it would make it the furthest out of all the girlgroup singles. Poor Freak Like Me...

When I was first rating these songs, "Push the Button" was probably my favorite of the Sugababes #1's. After a couple more listens, I think that honor now belongs to "Freak Like Me," but this was a fine choice for their highest-ranking track.
On the other hand, there are no girl groups in the top 25? Not a single one?! As I mentioned before, that is just WRONG.

Awesome to see "Born to Make You Happy" and "American Boy" do so well. I LOVE those songs.
"Lady Marmalade" is sort of a mess and sort of amazing at the same time. It's too high, but I use it, especially Lil' Kim's rap verse.

Wait, you'd hadn't heard FLM prior to the rate? In my opinion it's in another league to all the other Suga singles.

Nope, I'm a total Sugababes newbie! The only song I knew before this year was "Virgin Sexy," which a friend gave me on a mix CD in high school. Ace showed me the ways of "Overload" during Best of the Best a couple of months ago, but their sound is just now growing on me. I love the darker, grittier vibe of that song and "Freak Like Me"; I haven't really heard that in a girl group before (except maybe Girls Aloud).

Push the Button, American Boy and Born To Make You Happy are perfect.
I would have given Lady Marmalade a 10 if it were just a Mya and Lil Kim collab. Unfortunately those two are let down by P!nk garbling in some indistinguishable language and Xtina pretty much parodying herself.
And I know that this is brought up by someone after like every update, but I'm DYING at Bring Me To Life still being here.

You should check out their Greatest Hits, Overloaded! I keep forgetting they're as local as local goes so the US probably doesn't know about them, but their lower tempos are just exceptional. Run for Cover, Stronger, Follow Me Home, Too Lost in You...all amazing. They've got the dark All Saints vibe to them- kinda the polar opposite to Girls Aloud and their uptempo bubblegum pop.

Okay, I think the 4 going today are quite unexpected. Or...I'd say 1 is. Maybe 2.
I won't say shocking, cos I know ya'll think that's the new iconic.

24. Madonna- Sorry (7.882)
Highest score: 10 x8 (Strangergab, JDella11, lovesong, conseeded, Regina George, Sporefan, berberocka, Dream)
Lowest score: 4 x2 (airbornE, jqnetto)
An unflattering photo of Madonna:
How can you gerls suddenly lose all your venom? A 4 as the lowest score? Where is your troll gloves at? Whatever.
Here's a bit of dance-pop before the dance-pop thing was 'in'. Madonna bringing dem trends. So the video shows Madge doing a bit of cruising round town, getting that toyboy under 40 c*ck. Showing she's definitely in with all the trends and she's definitely still cool and w/ all the kids, she tweets her Myspace cover photo and pays homage to hit TV show Pimp My Ride. However, no amount of tweeting to her Tumbles could make this a success in the US. Radio crucified her; a #58 chart mess. Suddenly that #10 for GMAYL doesn't seem so bad, eh?
Jinzo's verdict: 8
One of her best efforts of the 2000s....you know, before the head-first descent in total mediocrity that occurred after this album. She really did bring something new to the table at that time, not just following whatever trend seemed hip like she does now.
