All you need is a proper case (not just a skin) and you can drop it as many times as you want. I dropped my 3GS all the time and it was fine, until the bottom of its case got lost and I had to take the entire thing off. A few weeks later I dropped it on a sidewalk and it got badly cracked--but it was still usable. And then I got a 4S and it has a perfect Griffin case. I've dropped it a handful of times in the six months I've had it with no problems.
