We live in an age when moronic moguls like Donald trump and greedy, clueless propagandists are the top contenders to become the next president of the United States. Subjected to such distressful socio-political circumstances, it is safe to say that most people will seek music in order to escape the horrifying reality.
That being said, I look at your mid-year best of and I see that Formation is at #1. Now, bear with me; If we decorticate Formation and strip it from all the pretension we have been led to fall for when it comes to this song, we are left with nothing.
The song starts with an interesting beat, albeit contrived. However, the song rapidly spirals down into a generic beat where Beyoncé mindlessly repeats idiotic words and statements that have very little to do with the statement we initially started with.
Do we really have to encourage such a toxic political behavior in music? How do we let the people flee from the routine of greedy politics if we are celebrating the musical equivalent of a Hillary Clinton speech as the best song of the year? That’s not even trying to get into the endless contradictions that exist between the lyrics of this song and Beyonce’s general disposition in life.
