I had the same concerns, but get the XL. DS games get slightly blurrier with the extra screen size, but it's not enough to be terribly bothersome and some argue it actually looks better due to the XL screen itself (it's, I believe, higher quality hardware). And worst case, you can hold start and select when you boot up a game to boot it at its native resolution (so you'll have a smaller box on your screen, but perfect detailing).
For actual 3DS games the XL has no downsides. XY will look flawless on it.
