I'll give it another try. I'm also not big on Ziggy Stardust, but I think some of that has to do with not growing up in that musical climate and having the pure novelty of the sound hit me for the first time as opposed to regularly hearing music influenced by it.

I can't at you idiots being in here saying "if you're on a music forum you should know" when literally the point of being on here is that if you truly don't know, this is where you will discover them. Stop being pretentious assholes and actually try to educate people on who they are and why they're important. Until you learn how to effectively communicate this, you shouldn't be talking down to anyone especially when there are other genre's like jazz that are more influential that you couldn't name one artist of. And to be clear, just because a rock band/artist is a fav of someone's fav does not obligate anyone to have to go listen to them, period.

Yes, it is tragic that people (including myself) are not all that informed about rock, but it's even more tragic that rock stans label you as "stupid" and "not a real music fan" just because of that. Get a grip. You aren't the edgy. Ruling people out due to the fact that they aren't just as educated as you is idiotic. Maybe they're more educated on another genre than you.

Age / Enviornent factors into it as well.

True. Rock fans are super pretentious but how are pop fans here not? Just look at the members who vicariously live through pop critics and metacritic. Only difference is rock fans base their attitude on the legacy of the artists over anything else. Pop fans can't even form their own opinions when they don't let top 40 radio do that for them and you expect rock fans to take them seriously.

It's a classic in a decade filled with them, that's how great the decade was for music albums wise. I'd put a few albums ahead of it though.

As for radiohead, they were always a niche band, at least in the states. Their notoriety grew over time but not to the point were I'd be upset that someone wouldn't know of them. They were never at a Pink Floyd or Bowie level, or even a Nirvana.

There is a difference between knowing the frontman and every other member. I'd understand him if he didn't know any of the guitarists' or the drummer's name

Most of those individuals did not grow up in the 90's in the United Kingdom and are not working in the same industry

It's embarrassing with pop stans think that rock bands aren't relevant when they influenced so many things in music today.

To be on a music forum, you should know the best artists in each genre. You should know Dolly Parton, Garth Brooks, Shania Twain for country. You should know Iron Maiden, Queen, The Doors, The Ramones, ect. Just like everyone knows the best pop stars like Madonna, Prince, Cher, ect.
