10. Beach House - 'Thank Your Lucky Stars'
With their fifth (and second this year) album, Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally come back sonically to 2008 so if you love 'Devotion' you're definitely gonna enjoy this. The sound certainly is not as big as it was on 'Teen Dream' or on 'Bloom', but that's the point. There's no choir, no epic closer, there are hardly any catchy moments to be found here. But this is what makes this record great. It's refreshing and incredibly atmospheric.
9. Kendrick Lamar - 'To Pimp a Butterfly'
Spectacular. Tupac interview, political statements, Sufjan sample, elements of jazz and neo-soul, there's literally everything on 'To Pimp a Butterfly'.
10. Empress Of - "To Get By"
I have to admit that there are better songs on 'Me', but I just had to put "To Get By" on this list. Seriously, this one is an absolute banger.
9. Neon Indian - "Slumlord" / "Slumlord's Re-release"
Palomo's best work yet. That blooming intro, beautiful synthline and "Thriller"-inspired "Slumlord's Re-release", wow!
I thought TYLS was kinda... plain But I mean in no ways bad, just like, idk. I just didn't care
Love TPAB, already a classic pretty much, even if its a bit flawed the good aspects are just SO good that it makes up for it.
To Get By is a surprising pick, but I mean it IS a banger, you didn't lie
Slumlord is SO good. When I first heard it was slain completely. I don't think he'll top it for a while. It's on par with Polish Girl and Deadbeat Summer
TYLS and TPAB are both on my extensive list of albums I'm gonna try to listen to during these holidays. I liked Neon Indian's album but I need to listen to it a few more times.
8. Tame Impala - 'Currents'
I'm gonna be honest with you - 'Currents' didn't do much for me when it came out. Sure, the singles were good and I quite enjoyed the whole album when it leaked, but I just thought that it's not on the same level as 'Lonerism' (which was third on my album list from 2012). I missed the psychodelic vibe, the guitars, everything. It took me a couple of months to give it another proper listen, but once I gave it, everything clicked. I still find 'Lonerism' better, but some songs like the festival-ready 8-minute opener "Let It Happen", smooth "Yes I'm Changing" or album centerpiece, "Eventually" show how musically versatile Kevin Parker is.
7. Carly Rae Jepsen - 'E•MO•TION'
Possibly the best pop album since Robyn's 'Body Talk'. It honestly is as good as ATRL says it is. There's no filler, there's a great production here and the vocals are excellent. Everything is well calculated and everything works well, both slower ("All That") and faster (bonus track "I Didn't Just Come Here to Dance") songs. Carly takes risks and it pays off.
8. Tame Impala - "The Less I Know The Better"
I actually had a problem with choosing only one song from 'Currents' considering the fact that "The Less I Know The Better", "Yes I'm Changing" and "Let It Happen" are equally good so this pick is based on my iTunes plays.
7. Sufjan Stevens - "No Shade in the Shadow of The Cross"
Couldn't get into that Sufjan songs but I love everything else this update. Carly's vocals played me, they fit her songs so well and she's great at emoting.
One of my favorites from this year.
