Beyonce's feminism is not beyond reproach or criticism, but white feminists should always be side-eyed when attacking the politics of black women, seeing as that many have historically employed double standards where black women are concerned and are quick to either praise or look the other way when white women exhibit the same behaviors that they criticize about blacks.
Paglia gets less of a side-eye because she comes for whoever is in her line of vision on any given day, white black or what have you. Tomorrow, everyone and their mother is gonna be running with this "Nazi Baribie" ish. Paglia didn't have to put that out there for us not to be able to unsee. She's like the high-brow, feminist Wendy Williams. Messy as f*ck.

I assumed this meant she'd help him close negations at the very least. But actually this is more likely about her being a trophy wife. That is how she is looking to upgrade him.
"Still play my part and let you take the lead role"
What is her "role"? If he is taking the lead, she is in turn the subordinate... That's not feminism.

Can we EXTRACT the whole racism thing for a minute and just look at the facts:
If she's saying Beyonce's parents managing her career and her being married to a man who took her last name as well isn't feminist, how can her claims be credible? They barely hold water.

It's about upgrading his entire life with her presence. i.e. She needs him.
Otherwise she has another song on the same album about being someone's sugar mama.
Beyonce is a dynamic human being who expresses an entire range of emotions. Submissiveness and domination. People aren't static. Sometimes they want to please, sometimes they want to be pleased.

You can be a feminist and still be submissive to your man.

Wow exactly
It's embarrassing how people criticise her for having both Independent Women and Cater 2 U in her discography. Like as if people never have experienced more than one mood, emotion or situation. Tragic.

Feminism isn't about DOMINATING men.

I think the perception is Beyonce, like many other celebs, is attaching herself to a social issue in order to benefit her image. I always see articles comissioned by her PR team refer to her as "Feminism Icon" but what does she even do besides makes a few run of the mill "Girls Rule!!!!111" songs & make a few broad, throwaway comments about it that literally anyone could come up with? For someone who loves feminism so much and proclaims to be one publicly so often she has never really sat down and said "I'm a feminist because...". It doesn't seem genuine

Also, Upgrade U ain't the song to use to disprove her feminism
She's so cocky on this:
I hear you be the block
But I'm the lights that keep the streets on
Notice you the type that like to keep them on a
Leash though
I'm known to walk alone
But I'm alone for a reason
Sending me a drink ain't appeasing
Believe me
Come harder this wont be easy
Don't doubt yourself trust me you need me

How is being a femenist benefiting her image? If anything it's ruining it because many men who would listen to her is turned off because it seems gay to like a femenist icon. Women would like her music regardless.

Jay-Z: How you gon' upgrade me
What's higher than number one
Bey: I hear you be the block, but I'm the lights that keep the streets on
Bey: Come harder, this won't be easy
Don't doubt yourself trust me you need me
Bey is offering to upgrade him. Jay-Z is the one who require assistance.
Anything you cop I'll split the bill, that's a good look
She's willing to split the bill instead of having him pay for it all.
I can do for you, what Martin did for the people
Ran by the men, but the women keep the tempo
She's basically describing herself as an important leader. But she won't try to outdo Jay but rather run at his side.
Of course she then offer to let Jay-Z be the "man" but she will still maintain her role (as a morale support, an upgrader, a confidant)
Unless your flawless
Then ya dynasty ain't complete without a chief, like me
Jay-Z can't have it all without someone strong as Bey.
The song is more about feminism then you think

Here's a link to the charity she co-founded alongside Gucci and Salma Hayek if you'd like to donate.

Beyonce isn't (mainly) trying to appeal to straight men, it's not her demographic. She's always been a girl-power, sassy, diva-ish artist. I doubt men who were worried about seeming gay were running around bopping to Single Ladies and If I Were A Boy up until she claimed feminism. As for how it benefits her image, it makes her seem more radical and less like an a regular, boring pop tart. It makes her look like she stands for/ fights for something, and it's no coincidence it's something almost her entire target demo can relate too.

Even outside of her music she publicly (and privately) support causes that help women.

This isn't the best thing to use depending on how deep you look.
The block would still function well during the day without the street light however it would come in handy at nite(although it can function without it) however if the light isn't on the street it wouldn't serve a purpose ....the next few lines is basically saying she's hard to get(irrelevant to the discussion)

I still don't see how this makes her any less of an accessory. It seems as though Jay needed Bey no more than Barack needed Michelle. Michelle upgrades Barack because single/unmarried men do not win presidencies, but just because he needs her doesn't necessarily make them equals.
Especially when Michelle needs Obama in particular. Obama just needs a woman. Beyonce needed the only active hip hop legend, Hova. Jay could have had any exotic looking/white passing black pop girl to soften his image/broaden his appeal. Didn't he have eyes on Aaliyah 1st?

Sort of disgusting that this woman wants to discredit the feminism of a woman that has not only talked the talk but also walked the walk. I don't want to discredit Pagila but the impact Beyonce has had on improving the lives of women in need is monumental.

Well I guess it just depends on how you look at it. Like Bey doesn't need Jay-Z (in this song). She's the one making the deal to become equals to Jay-Z. And the song doesn't really indicate that Jay-Z "wear the pants" so to speak either.

This is such a biased way of looking at it. Obama probably wouldn't had even run without Michelle. "Any woman" Michelle isn't any woman. Just because Michelle isn't running for president (or have any intention to) make her lesser. Why are we talking as if we know the full details of their relationship anyway?
