I mean people should be able to wear them if they want. At the same time I find it completely sexist that women are forced to wear them in the name of religion. Why are men not required to cover up completely the way women are ? Why are men not shamed and forced to cover every inch of their bodies including their hair or face? I already know the answer though.

This might sound ignorant (i don't know the difference really), but why can't Muslim women just wear a hijab or abaya that doesn't cover the face? Is a burqa or a niqab a more religious garment to wear? I don't see the problem with banning a burqa or niqab when they literally hide your identity - the potential for crime is too much. A lot of convenience stores/gas stations in the US ban wearing masks, I don't see why special protections should be given for burqas when other religious garments (hijab, abaya) would supposedly serve the same religious purpose.

i think it depends on how the person was brought up.
if i recall correctly burqas and niqabs were imposed in highly fought/conflictive areas (say, afghanistan). there's no writing in the quran that imposes this as a rule for a muslim, but there were people brought up like that! i recall a reality tv show in which burqa and niqab-wearing women spoke about how they actually felt comfortable and more secure in them!!
so really it is a personal choice, but i guess that for security reasons that might not work in other countries/ or it could be seen as bad.

Some might have reasons to wear them in Afghanistan or Arabia for example to avoid attention and rape, but in the west this is not needed... I fail to see a reason why women should hide their face when the religion does not even prescribe it? It's just a remnant of a barbaric anti women past that has to be abolished everywhere
