There were rumors about Beyoncé releasing something as well.
I'm not saying she followed Bey's lead, but you need to come up with something better than that.

Sorry, but it actually does.
Beyoncé said she changed the game and the world when the digital dropped because she did 900k in the US after 10 days, but a year later we had Taylor Swift doing 1.2M in 7 days and now Adele almost surely doing 3M also in 7 days.
And they didn't need gimmicks. They only needed people connecting with their song, something Beyoncé couldn't do after the first few weeks.
When 70% of your album sales come from the first few weeks, instead of your singles released on the radio throughout the year (something Beyoncé didn't have), it shows people didn't buy the album because of the music, but because of the hype.

It'd be desperate if the material sucked and they thought they could get a "easy sale" but it turned out no one was dumb enough to buy what they were selling. That didn't happen with this. The only thing that's "desperate" is you and anyone else even attempting to undermine what she accomplished. Y'all truly lack common sense. Secondhand embarrassment.
|
They are desperate because, let's be honest, if Beyoncé hadn't released it that way, she wouldn't have sold 500k.
There's a reason she didn't manage to have success with any single after the hype had vanished.

I hope you're not serious if you think Adele was in any way channeling Kanye West when she thought of airing that commercial

But she did follow Bey's lead. She stayed completely secretive about her album. You never heard her talk about it on social media or somewhere else the past 2 years - just like Bey never even hinted at the surprise release herself. And then BOOM, one surprise drop, in Adeles case the Hello snippet on TV, and all the attention is on her - just like it was with Bey.
Its not too hard to see the evident similarities.

It always kills me when people say stuff like this "oh, but if so and so had happened then the result would have been like this! I just know lolz!"
You're saying that based on what? Nothing, because that's not what happened. You're embarrassing yourself in here. delete it fat!

I know I can't take anything you say seriously, if you honestly believe that hogwash you just attempted to pass as fact. She wouldn't have sold 500k? She didn't have any singles success? Are you being REAL? Goodbye.

They definitely have similarities in the way they handeld the album before it was released. The commercial can also be looked at as her BOOM moment that Bey had with her album being dropped. But there is an argument that she didn't follow her, because in the end she released a single and then the album in a typical fashion.

However, pre 2013, most popular artists didnt even make the attempt of releasing their music in a creative way (emphasis is on POPular artists). Usually, the way an album was released was very predictable: Lead single, second single, album. Album announcement during lead single. Some social media built-up, thats it.
ST made people actually THINK of ways to creatively release their albums/singles. We have people like Ariana or JB who do tons of miniclips/fotos until the release of their new singles, we have people like Adele thinking of new ways to launch their new eras, we have the actual suprise releases, etc.. A LOT has changed post 2013.

Why are some people here so pressed? This album is iconic & will forever be referenced in pop culture, anyone who surprise release their album or releasing an album with all music videos is called "pulling a Beyoncé". The impact is real, people seriously need to stop being so bitter.

Elle Oh Elle
Taylor Swift has turned her album announcements literal events ever since Red.
Katy Perry used a gold truck back in 2013, before Self-titled.
Britney's HIAM was one of the most hyped videos - it had 14 teasers.
Born This Way was arguably the most anticipated track from the decade until Adele's own Hello.
Honey, Beyoncé's self-titled has nothing on them. Her team just thought of something to do in order to minimize the lack of hits - it obviously worked on the beginning, since 70% of her sales came from those first 3 weeks.

you have a point, I made a mistake: The idea behind ST was to create as little buzz as possible beforehand and then come out of nowhere. Still being done nowadays way more than beforehand.

No, she didn't.
She hasn't released a notable global album.
I am Sasha is the closest but it's not on any level close to let's say Mariah in the 90's. She has like 3 global hits.
She is just another succesful female R&B artist, but she's black and US loves her so they praise all her little accomplishments.
Nothing new.

Since you like to use numbers in order to determine impact (even though thats rubbish to say the least):
Katy:
One of the Boys:
WW: 5,000,000
US: 1,690,000
UK: 674,588
Teenage Dream:
WW: 5,700,000
US: 3,000,000
UK: 1,171,340
Prism:
WW: 4,000,000
US: 1,650,000
Beyonce (sans IASF):
BDAY:
World: 8,000,000
(as of 2013)
US: 3,400,000
(as of 2014)
UK: 385,078
(standard vers.; as of 2011)
4:
World: 3,000,000
(as of 2013)
US: 1,410,000
(as of 2014)
UK: 603,548
(as of 2013)
BEYONCE:
World: 5,000,000
US: 2,200,000
UK: 418,000
Beys WW vs US ratio + sales are way more impressive than Katys. So I guess Beys more global than her at least.

TD sold 6.5 m
And PRISM outsold Beyonce EVERYWHERE except US.
Also, Katy has 3 albums and sold 140m records. The PRISM era alone sold 24m records WW, while Beyonce sold like 7m records.
Katy also has bigger streaming, airplay, views, followers, etc.
You are off-topic anyways. The article doesn't say Katy changed the industry.

of course she sold more records in total, all 3 eras by Katy had at least 2 supersmashes. In this, her first three eras resemble Beys first three way more. After IASF, Bey did not care as much about single success as before.
