Really though?
The surprise release compelled people who were either her fans, or casually interested in her to buy. It did not sell the album the way that a performance or interview would. Imagine you're watching The View. You heard about the BEYONCÉ album but you were not planning to buy it. She comes out and performs Pretty Hurts. You like it. You watch her interview. You like what she says about being a mother. The album suddenly seems more interesting. You buy it.
Promo like this works because it endears you to the artist or previews the album in a way that even if you heard some before, you hadn't thought about it. There is no way that a full week of promo would not have helped.
As for the "help" of physical sales, that was only for three of the ten days, so hardly a big help.
