I bought the Note 2 and it was ****. The Note One was so much better. Then I got the 5S and my dad got the Galaxy 3 and the performance was much better.
Apps used to crash constantly on my Note 2 and using the stylus caused it to lag horribly.
So I gave up after less than a year of owning it and gave it to a friend who lost his phone to borrow and I eventually said he could keep it.

That's the point though.
All these companies start off with one smartphone and build upwards. Samsung became successful early on, but the others have always had trouble. Considering how hard it is to crack the market, it makes Apple look good because they choose to only have a limited amount of phones (8 phones in 7 years).
When Samsung found success, they decided to create multiple smartphones and eventually have anywhere between 40 - 50 smartphones available at one time. They only recently stopped selling the Galaxy SI. Because they were able it achieve success early, they are now known as "the brand" of Smartphones along with Apple. Just like Nokia is more associated with Mobile Phones even though they make Smartphones now as well.
Apple however, chose to stay true to form, and still only keep selling a limited amount of phones, and only recently decided to release more than one phone per year. And yet Apple's smartphone sales are much higher than their competitors, with only three phones, with only one flagship.
Apple and Samsung are both established brands in the Smartphone era, the others are not. Yet Apple are able to outsell the others with just three phones, and able to sell half of what Samsung has been able to with 43 more phones.
It's less about "well other company's have blah amount of phones" and more about comparing established brands.
